<pony><WIP><original>My First Drop, need feedback

Postby Wintergreen » 08 Mar 2012 00:56

Hey everyone, this is my current WIP, and I really, REALLY need some feedback on the drop. Imma level with all of you, it hasn't been equalized or fully leveled yet, so that's gonna make it sound not as good as it normall would, but again, I'd love any and all suggestions.

The beat and stuff like that, and the instruments are place-holders for the moment, except the Massive Wobblers, those are the ones that are going to be finals. It's also repetitive at the moment, since I've as of now only really written one melody for it (making more)

tl;dr, I can has feedbacks?

Thanks, all!

Thanks, so the structure seems ok with it? Just need to do some leveling, and fancy sounding terms that I'm sure I'm using incorrectly. And, you know, the rest of the song, too.

yay

Heres my advice as I listen,

These synths in the intro are a little weak try making them more powerfull with some eq and synthesis work. I would keep the kick velocity the same throughout the buildup, at times it sounds as if it is clipping and distorting everything but it is a nice sounding kick. I didn't notice the clap until the second play through, you need to bring the clap out a lot to complement the kick. The drop gets really distorted due to being to loud, use a compresor to get it more managable. The drop is much more powerfull then the rest of the track espicially what comes after. The synths after the drop need to stand out more, do some more eqing and messing with the synth.

I like what your going for its just not there yet, keep working and you can have a gem of a track!

Yes, make it sound fuller! The melodies are strong, but they fall flat because they sound too unidimensional. Pan everything! Use stereo separators! Also, where's the bass? Either the kick is too overpowering, or it sounds like there's a big frequency gap in there. Also, yes, make the claps more present. If you're aiming for something more jarring, make your wobbles more jarring and dense. Fill up your frequency range, and if you're using Massive, abuse the dimension expander and tube effects!

Never heard of those things...Dimensional expander, and tube effects...got it. Yeah, I haven't done any equalizing, and don't even have the instruments made for the main melodies the ones in place right now are just placeholders to help me lay down the tune. I've spent most of my time learning Massive and laying down the drop. I must admit, I really want to learn Z3ta+ and Sylenth and Albino, are there any good places I can go to learn those? Also any places I can read up on/watch tutorials on Massive would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback so far, also!

There is a lot of tutorials for massive on youtube other then that read the manual it comes with and you will likely learn a lot more about the program then a tutorial woudl teach you. Z3ta+ is a great synth but it is much more difficult then masive imo. I use massive for their lfo routing and Z3ta for its synthesis, I love those wave shapers. I have not found any worthwhile tutorials for Z3ta yet so I read the manual and played around a bunch. It helps to use a preset, deconstruct it, and change the modulation routing.

I see words, but no meaning. I believe it was Socrates who said 'the only true wisdom comes in knowing that you know nothing', and through this avenue of logic I have determined I am indeed quite wise in regards to music.

So much I need to learn...

"I see words, but no meaning." I don't think I'm following you on that?..

I know I am learning new things everyday and I believe just about every producer is too.. I even read that deadmau5 is hosting a production tent at a music fesival for anyone who wants to produce with him, he said "and hopefully we can learn from eachother", that shows me he hopes to learn new things.

just a little joke, I kinda understood what you were saying, but not really. I'm...VERY new to this game.

But that's really cool about Deadmau5, he's actually kinda one of my stylistic influences for a couple of my songs, in a few ways.

Ah, I get it.. I think, anyway I just saw this video (I am going to make a thread about it somewhere) and it has changed the way I think about my musical life... seriously only a fool would not watch and meditate on the facts he brings up (its hard to explain, just watch)
