<wip><nonpony><original> I don't even know what to call this

Postby colortwelve » 18 Feb 2012 14:05

I've been working on something for the past few days... I'm somewhat happy with it so far, but there are a few things I'd like to bounce off of this community, if said community would be willing.

Basically, I want to know:
-Is it too short?
-Does it need anything else?
-Should I attempt to ponify it? (I was getting ready to put a sample in at the breakdown, but so far everything sounds awkward and out of place.)
-Anything else that might be on your mind regarding this... thing.

So here's a link to the .mp3. Keep in mind that it's unfinished at the moment (though I may not make very many changes if it doesn't need many).

I quite like this. Allow me to run through your little list.

There is certainly nothing wrong with it being short, as far as I'm concerned; it usually doesn't work to try to stretch an idea out into the length you feel a song should be, anyway.

Does it need anything else? I really don't know. It stands alone pretty well on its own, in my eyes; it's got a sparse kind of feel to it, but I think that comes out as simple elegance. Adding more voices, maybe filling out some sections with some harmonies or so on would probably work, but it's quite a nice piece as it is.

I don't know if ponification is necessary... if you can't do it nicely, it's probably not worth making your song worse. You don't need to have pony quotes in everything you do. (However, ponification can be achieved in much more devious ways... I don't think there's anything pony at all about Omnipony's 'Time Is Running Out' in and of itself, but just the title links its mood to a pony concept. Just a thought.)

Where my thoughts are concerned, again, I like the simplicity. I think this works. You could add more; more voices, more harmonies, more melodies, more sections, but it stands well on its own the way it is.
Signatures are really annoying and they take up too much space.

Hehe, saw your comment on Soundcloud. Thanks for complimenting it... And I'll definitely keep your advice in mind when I'm redoing my very first track (well, to be technical, my third, but it was my first serious attempt at any rate). If there's one thing I know I could for certain improve upon, it's complexity. I've never been one for simplicity - and I intend to run as far away from it as I can in my next few stabs at music.

So yeah, thanks again for the acknowledgement. I'll be sure to reciprocate the favor once I have time to run through your Soundcloud :D

I agree with CKeyboard. I mean, you could definitely build the tension and drop it, and from there make it more complex, but it's fine on it's own.

I kinda think of it like a delicious hamburger, fresh from the grill (Screw fast food). It's really good just on a bun, but if you want to add toppings and build onto it, that works too.
