So, I grew paranoid that I was overthinking the mixing, decided that I'd only become less and less satisfied with it as time went on, and uploaded it to youtube.
This was a mistake in my mind. The first 2 minutes of it seem dry and boring, the mixing is horrible, the vocals need to be redone 'cause I was eating the mic so i didn't get too loud (I hate recording with other people in the house), etc etc.
Can I have some serious suggestions for this track? Not so much for content, but for production. And not, just "put compressor on [insert track]", I'd like for it to be a bit more in depth, because i know nothing about mixing, so I wanna know what to do, how to do it, and why I'm doing it.
I originally envisioned the intro, the breakdown, and the end to have background chatting and such, but only 2 people responded to the request for that, and I couldn't find any decent samples for a moderately sized group of people.
Hahaha I don't even go on here anymore Seriously hit me up on skype or something, I'm rarely if ever online here.
When the distortion guitar (around 3:30) comes in, the vocals are drowned out just a bit. My suggestion would be to try to EQ the midrange of the guitar down a tad, and EQ the mids of the vocals up a touch. (But keep in mind I'm still very new and really have no idea what I'm doing)
I think the fundamentals of the composition are great. The first two minutes are fine.

One thing I noticed was that I barely could hear s-sounds and things like this in the vocals, which probably could be solved by EQing the heights up just a little. And in my opinion the drums could profit from a little more punch. For things like this I always use a VST called Maximus. If you don't have it already, maybe you should take a look at it. It's quite a useful tool. But that's all. And overall it already sounds pretty good.
I liked it man. The previous recommendations I think our helpful and as you said you could do another vocal take if they were under less then ideal conditions. Otherwise great job as always and just a few things you could tweak but don't feel bad about this as this is great. Love that keyboard riff a lot. Love this proggy indie rock gem.
