<pony> "Twi" by Berd

Postby bigBerd » 09 Jan 2012 14:42

My name is Berd and I do raps.

A while ago I decided to combine two of my favorite things; ponies and hip-hop. So, I created this little story, which serves as both a fictional narrative told from the perspective of Twilight Sparkle and a cover of the legendary song "Stan" by Eminem. The story takes place sometime after S02E02.

Here are the lyrics if you wanna read along:

And here's the video version of the song, I omitted the last verse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tk8tDpweJB4

Great job!

The only suggestions I have is to maybe add a little bit more emotion. Some parts are good, but others just seem like a first reading. Same goes for the volume of the vocals, they're perfect at some parts but too low at others.
Long time pianist and mediocrity extraordinaire.

Mmm Dido...=) (Sorry, I lurve "Thank You", the song sampled in this and the original.)

Anyway, nice work. I'm not a huge fan of rap, but looking at it completely objectively, I liked it. Very sad story (but I love the extra verse told from your perspective). The levels on your voice are generally clear, I had an easy time understanding all the way through, even though sometimes they seemed a bit on the low side.
All in all, nice job Berd! Hope to hear more from you.

^Read the first post of that topic and take note of the tags that go before the topic title of your song, for future posts. You probably won't be maimed for not doing it, but make it a point to do it from now on. This one would be
<Pony><Parody> "Twi" (Though if it's obviously a pony song by the title like this one, you probably don't have to worry about the <Pony> tag).

Holy crap. This is brilliant! I love it so much! I mean, I already love Stan, and then you took it and then did this amazing thing with it. I was about to comment on how yeah, at times it seemed like you were just doing a reading, and that it lacked energy, but after listening to it entirely I can see why, and I think it's perfect the way it is, how it escalates in intensity according to Twi's feelings in her letters. That was really well done.

Your rapping is top notch as well. Just sayin'. If anything, the only thing I'd move around would be your vocals' EQ, they sound a little too subdued, kinda middle-y, a bit on the muddy side. I dunno, I'd like them to be brighter, clearer. But this is an amazing job, seriously, well done!

@X-Trav yeah, each verse was done in a single take each, I'll probably re-record it if I end up doing other stuff with pony raps.

And I'll add the <pony> tag, but in all honesty I wouldn't consider this work to be a parody, per se. Please allow me to explain my reasoning.

In hip-hop, if a rapper takes another artist's already-established record and does his own rap to it, it's only considered a parody if the rapper takes some sort of verbal shots at the original artist. Now, this song really doesn't rank on Eminem, it just borrows the premise from the original song's story.
And while it's clear I don't take myself entirely seriously (as evidenced by the last verse), but I'd like to consider this song more of a grim tale/ballad than a parody.

I don't mind at all. In fact, I'm flattered! I'm not very good when it comes to networking online.

Fair enough, I honesty wondered myself if this would actually be considered a parody or not, but that makes sense. Point taken. In any case, great work!

Your rap is just really freaking good man. I'll probably sound silly saying this, but I don't really know how to say it better, I really, really like your flow, your general style. They also replied that they'll add it to their queue, so there you go, it will be published in a few, and it will be well deserved. c:

I think that Pony Rap scene is pretty wide open (there really isn't one) and it could blend in well with the [http://rateyourmusic.com/list/TheScientist/rym_ultimate_box_set__nerdcore,nerdcore scene] (that might welcome us actually) and this is a rather good concept and works as a whole. I hope you keep at this style and work on the vocals just being a tad better in the mix as this is a GREAT start. Love the twist at the end.
