<pony> <remix> Winter Wrap Up (Sparkle Mix)

Postby TheSunAndTheRainfall » 30 Dec 2011 18:24

It took forever, but I finally managed to churn this thing out. I kind of shunned Twi in my At The Gala remix, so I made a song around her now.

This is sort of an experiment in manipulating the pitch of vocals, parallel compression, making wub wub wubby noises, and a couple of reverse effects.

I'd seriously appreciate ANY feedback you guys could offer on this, both composition-wise and mix-wise. I know it's kind of a mess; I'm just never able to get my mixes to sound quite as I'd like them to, and I can't even pinpoint exactly what it is I'm unhappy with. Maybe I should just cut back on adding so many layers, god knows this song is quite convoluted.

Also, I can never get my guitars to sound right, although that may have to do with the fact that I'm recording it through the mic jack on my laptop using a cheap adapter.

Anyway, yeah, the song:

Thanks, y'all. c:

Goddamn, every time I upload a song I feel like puking. :/

Twilight definitely needs MORE songs. :D

Sound wise there's some very cool elements in here and you definitely played around with the vocals as planned. Its just a little too busy when the vocals are playing before the 3:00 period (especially the guitars in the second minute) BUT the vocals after 3:00 seem better in just repeating the chorus with a little less chaos. Less might be more on this track. Since I've SEEN your FL projects first hand I think I can agree you've got too many layers and things going on here (especially initially). I know you've got electronics throughout and guitars entering in midway and in the later half, maybe have it go from electronic at the beginning to mostly organic by the end (like out of Winter and into Spring) as it just seems to busy otherwise to include both at once. I guess the bigger question is do you feel this is finished and if not will our input lead you to something better? I know we don't have a wip forum and this isn't tagged as that but sometimes a pre-listen and others input can improve the finished song (especially if you're tired of working on it).

This is still REALLY good, overall i just think it can be a little better with tweaks and picking and choosing what you want in there and when (if you want to). I feel terrible about giving your music such critiques as you're light years ahead of most people in creation and production.

It also sounds makes me sad as I haven't seen any sign of spring yet!! :D

Pon-3, thanks a million for your input. I really value your feedback, and I'm just so grateful that you took the time to listen and write all that down.

I'm kinda weird when it comes to my songs, in that I sort of send them down once I think my vision is complete, and although most of the time I feel like there's something missing in them, or they could be improved in some way, I never really go back to them, or even listen to them anymore. Once I'm done with a song then I'm done and it's just left behind.

That's not to say any feedback you offer won't be of use. I always take in everything everyone has to say about my work, reflect on what it means in regards to what I did previously, and use that knowledge in the future to do things differently, to shape my music so it can translate the ideas in my head to something more real more faithfully. Otherwise I'd be stuck doing things the same way over and over, making the same mistakes every time. So even if I don't use your input to fix whatever it is you're suggesting for me to fix in the song we're discussing at the moment, I always take it into account, and use it whenever I work on something else. :)

But yeah, I think I have to learn not to go nuts with multiple individual melodies, and technological wankery, and perhaps just add enough coherent elements to form an atmosphere, rather than have every instrument fighting for attention.

Thanks again. :)

I'm afraid I cannot provide any technical feedback but I can say that your stuff always puts me in a good mood and makes me want to dance, and I hate dancin'. When Twilight says "all things warm and green" why does that sound so familiar? I don't know but I just love the way she says it.

Also, you're from Mexico? Awesome! Which part? :D

Thx Rainfall, I'll admit I was kinda sweating bullets on how you'd interpret that level of input and whether you were looking for critique or if you were more after affirmation. I listened to your track about 4 times before i could effectively put down what was slightly off about it as it wasn't blatantly apparent. Remember we (or myself for sure) can always be your sounding board if you want a pre-listen before you publish something and you or others can always remix your own work (nothing's ever final if it doesn't need to be). I know what you mean though by wanting to be DONE with a track when your at a certain stage though (although i generally want to give a track several listens over a few days before I'm sure its done). :)

Regardless, glad to have you here as I really enjoy your bright music. :D

Ha! Thanks! I'm real happy to hear that!

I'm from Cuernavaca, it's a small-ish city about an hour south from Mexico City, but I sort of moved to Mexico City about a year and a half ago for college. So now I'm sort of going back and forth between both places; I'm home for the weekends and school breaks, and I'm in the city the rest of the time for school. c:

And thanks, Pon-3. It means a lot that you're willing to invest your time and effort in helping me improve. I guess it would be a good idea to be more patient when it comes to releasing songs, and let them sit for a while so I can make appropriate changes instead of going OMG I JUST FINISHED OK HERE GOES *BAM* like I usually do. :B

Yeah its SOOO easy to do that. I constantly have to play the "is this done?" game with myself as it sucks to listen a week later and think " i should have tweeked this and this" as half the time you're aware that something is off when you release it.
