<pony>Babs Seed "Remix"

Postby Feat » 20 Mar 2013 12:24

Hewwo there! I'm new here, and I'm just learning the art of music producing. I play around and try to find my own way of doing most things. I have no former education, but I try my best with the time I have to spend on it. This wasn't really intended to be a remix of the song, but rather an attempt to use voice splicing using Babs' own speaking voice from the episode. But... that was way too hard for me. I should do that with vocals from a song some time. That way it's already melodic. Anyway, this is what I made from what I had. When I realized how I could do this to the vocals, I just went with it. And it sounds cool I guess...
Anyway, tell me what you think and what you hate about it. I love receiving well constructed criticism, there's so much to learn from it! I could point out quite a few things myself, but I'm not going to even touch this ever again. I'm sick of it. :/

Howdy there~ Your colored text tricked me into thinking it's a link. Dammit.

Wow so you just got into music production? No previous education? Ha! Pretty good first attempt, if I may say so. Keep it up and you'll be improving at the speed of light~ (or sound. Definitely sound).

Oh well on to the song. Don't know if you were intending to do this, but you haven't established a down-beat prior to 0:29. And thus I felt like I lost half a beat and had to reorient myself. It's not too big of a problem, but just thought you should know.

Interesting use of the vocal from 0:29 to 0:59-ish (and 1:40 onward) (sounds like vocoder. If so, try different carrier signals. You'll be surprised with what you can get away with)! You could afford to experiment more, and see what kind of a sound you get. Pitching and slicing and all that mumbojumbo.

It's nice of you to keep to your theme throughout the song, but after a while, people start looking for a contrasting section. Contrasting melody, harmonic movement. As it stands now, it sounds like you're just repeating one section of the music over and over again. It may be your intention, but the song could be much better if it has a better structure (studying professionally produced music helps). Ending felt a bit sudden, especially since you were droning on the entire theme repeatedly. Perhaps a periodic exit for each instrument?

And since you decided to name this a Babs Seed "remix" (sounds like more vocal splicing based on Babs Seed. Give the song a unique name!) you might want to toy with Bab's vocals a bit more. Perhaps an interplay between dry, unprocessed vocal splices with the vocoded ones you have already? Having a melody line would also help dry in the audience even more.

All I can hear on the first listen through keep it up dude~

Yep, that was intended. I even made the melody pattern of the lead end in a way that would disorient the listener. It's just to mess with people, really. ;P

I tried different carriers until settling down with just one, which I know gets repetitive. I only have three different patterns, one for the bassline and two for the leads. And the carrier follows the pattern of the leads. Soo... It's not really meant to have much variety. Well of course I strive to have variety in my songs, but this isn't an attempt to make good music. See, I haven't done longer pieces before and I wanted to try my hand at controlling vocals so that they match the song, as well as using some sort of transitions. When I started working on this, the purpose was to learn what I didn't know how to do. And I did learn a lot. :D

You did bring up some good points and I will take them in consideration for my next project. But I won't try to make this one any better, since that was not the point. I made it solely for my own learning.

Also, I'm sorry if I did the posting wrong. It's my first post.
Babs Seed "Remix" is a description of the post, not the name of the song. The song, as stated in the soundcloud title, is called Babs The Brutal Robot Seed. I wrote the double quotations in "Remix" simply because it's not really a remix. But since it has the vocals of the original, I thought it would describe it to a greater extent than anything else I could come up with.

Thank you for your feedback! I will look into improving my knowledge of song structure for sure, I'm really far behind on that part.
The more you know the more you wish you knew less.
