<pony><original> Machines

Postby Pimps_McGee » 04 Jan 2013 19:15

Started this one a while ago using some inspiration from Daft Punk and Pink Floyd but wasn't able to finish it until recently due to school and applying for college.

The actual song, as it starts, is about Vinyl Scratch and her fall to these electronic machines as demonstrated by the heavily synthesized instruments as well as the vocoder. Then out of nowhere come these more live sounding instruments(the drums and strings), which represent Octavia as she essentially saves the corrupted Vinyl.

Basically it's shipping.

The concept is pretty cool, and you've pulled it off quite well. The mixing of the various instruments was very fluent, the transitions were really solid, and the entire feel was spot-on. I feel like you could've done a bit of a better job at mixing, although it's not too bad. I can't really find much to complain about though. I really love this song, in all honestly. EPIC job.

Mixing definitely not my strong point but I'm glad to know that the instrumentation worked out well!

Aaaaahhhh. The irony.

The "fall to machines" section you pulled off well (not that I would know, haha). It was a nice concept, about the salvation by live instruments. And it was going well, until...

GAH! (Not to be harsh, but) Those strings! If anything, they are the machines!
On a more serious note, though, those strings sound highly mechanical, and not live at all. Really "kills" the concept there. And instrumentation-wise... well, I get this feeling that those drums don't fit all that well. Octavia doesn't seem to mesh with that sort of thing. I'm not quite getting the "Octavia saves the day" feel.

I was hoping for this epic orchestral takeover of the entire song, which would have been ASTOUNDING! Alas, even by the end of the song, it felt quite electronic, as if the strings and drums had fallen from grace as well.

It was, per se, a decent song, but it's not quite painting the right picture.
I'm always half-asleep, and I hate dubstep.
Also, you know that other, way more awesome Nomnom guy who shows up on EQD sometimes? THAT PERSON IS NOT ME.
We just happen to have similar pseudonyms.

The problem with the strings is probably because of the soundfont I used. I realized at the time they weren't the most live sounding things and even after loading it down with some effects to give a more live feel, it wasn't perfect.

As much as I would have liked to do a massive orchestral moment for the end I just didn't have capablities to accomplish it.

I don't blame you. Those sort of things can get quite difficult, especially when many of us on this forum don't have access to those million-dollar sample libraries, nor a full orchestra to record. I envy those who can afford those things...

To quote an overused internet meme:
I know that feel bro. I really do.
