<pony><original>David's Hubris (Final)

Postby Bugsydor » 15 Aug 2012 18:07

I wrote this music as a boss battle theme for the villain David in CardsLafter's fanfic, Through the Eyes of Another Pony. A large part of said fight seems to be a smugness contest. I'm thinking of using this as my audition piece to get onto the TtEoAP animation team as a music artist. Wish me luck! ^^;

The song here is the first I've written, although I have posted a couple of older versions of it here before. As I'm rather new to this music making thing, I'd appreciate it if you could leave comments here, on Youtube, or on Soundcloud so I can get better at this. I made them on LMMS with some free VSTi's, and I made the album art in Inkscape.

I wasn't sure which embed would be best to use, so I decided to use Youtube for the actual embed, and just link to all of the others. Well, there is no kill like overkill, after all. Here goes! (Note: if this isn't an acceptable practice, or is just plain annoying, please give me a better idea on which embed method I should pick instead of just using all of them.)

You and your tropes xD I see you are still at that.

This song just seems like it lacks direction. I'm not sure what to tell you other than go simple. Simpler drum beats, something to play chords, and not everything in the song being melodic.

I do admire you for making something in LMMS, and I am curious; what are the specific free plugins that you used for this song?

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to remember not to try out too much polyphony in future pieces, and keep it to one or two melodies at a time along with some harmony parts. That ought to fix some of the cohesion issues I face. Regarding the drums, It's curious that you should say to simplify it. For the longest time, everyone who listened to earlier versions of it told me they were too simple. My next project (that I'll hopefully be able to complete before in time for the remix war) is going to be a Ska arrangement of pRk's Divinity made in Podium Free, so hopefully I won't have to deal with a DAW that's less stable than the Greek economy.

Plugins I used:
  • Ambience and Dasample Glaceverb for the reverb.
  • DSK Brass for the Trumpets and Flugel Horns (This one is a nightmare to use in LMMS, though, as it kept losing the settings for which instrument it was playing and liked to crash the whole dang program whenever I looked at it funny).
  • Chineewinds Mini DiZi for the flute.
  • SpearGear's Raspier for the bass guitar (I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. Very customizable, and comes with a ton of fun and useful presets).
  • And then there was the string quartet soundfont I picked up from Florestan's website that I used for the cello.
And not one of those cost me a dime. For the drums I used a list of free samples somepony quite helpful posted to this forum. Can't remember where it is, though, but I hear it's a pretty standard collection.

Haha yah, the art of many melodic lines at the same time is touhou tough to pull off. If you want to figure that out you should study some Bach or Beethoven.

(As for that strikeout, I did somehow manage to type "touhou" even though I intended to type "tough" MAYBE IT IS A SIGN)

Aside from my being too ambitious just yet and polyphony tackling me rather than the other way around, what was good about this song? And were you admiring my sticking to LMMS through the cavalanche of crashes, or was it something else?

And yes, Touhou is from a genre that drives me batty, as much fun as it may be to play. I find the Freudian Slip to be most apropos.

Well, I thought it was definitely a solid piece, and it shows that you have a good idea of what you are doing, it just doesn't seem organized very well. That is why I recommended that you try simpler things, because it is easier to create a more cohesive song that way.

Also, kinda unrelated, but don't let anyone tell you that repetition is inherently a bad thing, don't let anyone tell you that simplicity is a fault, and don't abuse the virtues of repetition and simplicity to the point where your song is lazy and bland.
