<original> <Pony> <TLKII> Light in the Everfree

Postby Conduit » 13 Aug 2012 13:36

Hey everyone, this is my track from the Lesser Knowns Two album (Check out part one here

The backstory I had in my mind while writing it was this: You're wandering the Everfree at night, and between the trees you see a lantern bobbing along. It could be Fluttershy, Zecora, or perhaps something a little more dangerous.

I tried to capture each of these three things through different elements of the song. Fluttershys inspiration became the light harp leads and choir, with zecora inspiring the drums, and the danger of the forest inspiring the slightly ambient sounding breaks in the song.

Anyway, thats enough of me talking about it, have a listen and tell me what you think. Also, make sure you check out the album, as everyone has worked amazingly hard on their tracks and I'm sure you won't be disapointed (Its also free!)

Welp, the main riff you used with the strings/harp at the beginning needs a tender more eqing/compression (either one) and few of the instruments (one part of the trumpets to take note) gets off beat. Nice thing you did with the drums, the choir ahhs and/or oohs (I really don't know :3) were done pretty well. The part at 2:16 was the best though, the violin was gorgeous :3. But after that, I was really hoping it would stay and you'd add something else. But it did get better anyways. With the woodwinds... it sounds right, but then it sounds it's completly wrong.

All in all, it was a great song, but there are a few probs to me here and there. This is only my thoughs though so yea >.>

Umm, I'm not sure if that's a typo there (perhaps "more tender"?), but I think the soft strings and harp were fine as is. I was getting a nice vibe of expectation/curiosity from it, which I think is what flatflish was going for.

I will agree here, however. They didn't carry the overall theme of the song. It sounds, I can't find the right word... Perhaps a bit juvenile or too light hearted. It was more due to the melody than the instrument, I feel.

Nevertheless, I really liked it. It could have been tweaked here or there but it was relatively minor stuff so don't sweat it and just keep an ear out next time.

Thanks a ton, by the woodwinds do you mean the part starting at 2:48? If so I completely agree that it doesn't really fit. I wanted to change it, but didn't have quite enough time to write something to fill that space before the deadline.

Vinxis would you mind pointing out the off beat portions? I can't find them but thats probably because I spent so much time listening to this already, so my ears are kinda deaf to the problems.

Again, thanks to you both, this was my first orchestral piece and I need to know my flaws if I want to improve.
