<WIP><Pony> Soaring (Need Feedback)

Postby Navron » 15 Jul 2012 21:48

Alright guys, as some of you may remember, I've decided for my sound I want to mix classical and orchestral elements w/ dirty elektro basses and other club elements.

Let me know if this is on the right track:

The song is about Rainbow Dash competing with other Pegasi for a spot on the Wonderbolts, so I wanted to give it a fierce competitive type of feel.

As for feedback, I'm looking more for compositional feedback. What doesn't work, what does work, etc.

I could especially use some tips on the drums, because right now I don't think my drop has much of a danceable beat to it.

Anyway, please let me know what you think!

My friend gave me some good feedback, so my next update will likely be vastly changed, but I'm still looking to get as much feedback as possible.

I know drums so here goes:

Well, you lose that kick behind the snare and lead orchestra bits. I am imagining a much bigger kick, like a HUGE and demanding one would suit this track well. Get one with a long subby release and use some very light sidechaing so the kicks initial transient stands out a bit more (no pumping feeling).

The snare could also be much bigger with more frequencies and a longer release (the drums intro feels really empty). Use some layering and when it drops you could give it a really long release for the first few hits.

The other hats and other percussion sound a little bland, take an EQ to all of them and raise the highs some they become more 'lively'.

Making that kick and snare stand out more should help it become more danceable.

Good tension buildup in the beginning! It carries an undertone of defeat, probably speaking to RD's fear of failure in competition.

When the beat kicks in, it retains its grittiness which works well for RD putting her "game face" and looking all badass for the crowd. I dare say it takes on an almost militaristic feel - maybe she's getting carried away in the moment, no longer strutting for the sake of spectacle and competition, but marching out to war.

That's what I got from listening to it. The drums could definitely use some strengthening in tone (Acid has some nifty sounds, by the way), but once finished, I think this will be a nifty precursor to a larger piece representing the main event, so to speak.
