<wip> <pony> <remix> The Best Song I've Never Heard

Yeah.

Probably the most ambitious project I've embarked upon thus far in my musical career, such that it is.

Imagine eight or ten of the most prominent brony musicians (well, basically the most prominent ones I listen to) each represented by at least a measure of one of their songs in one remix created by me. (Title of thread is placeholder track title.)

Yeah. And it's almost going reasonably well. (I say with optimism it may or may not deserve.)

Thought I'd mention it here. I might have previews or so on up here soon. But if anyone has thoughts or whatever, by all means.

Cheers.

[Edit: Might as well note, the songs I'm currently using are Autumn (Jackle App), September (Living Tombstone), Beyond Her Garden (WoodenToaster), Sunshine and Celery Stalks (PinkiePieSwear), PIRL (BlackGryph0n/BAASIK), Heartstrings (H8_Seed), Discord (Eurobeat Brony), and Party With Pinkie (Alex S.).]

Okay, so here's a preview.

I've added five more songs to the list, and seven more musicians- Fluttershy is a Dubstep Robot (General Mumble), Poni Robots (Omnipony), Fear of Flight (Aviators), A Long Way from Equestria (AcousticBrony & MandoPony), and Clash with Dash (Interrobang Pie). Mic the Microphone is also represented.

The idea of a medley of well known tracks is a pretty cool idea. A lot of the backing is your own track which I have to admit is a little plain and could use a little more variety (breakdowns, rises, sections, etc), when the samples enter they blend pretty well together though. Obviously you're giving plenty of credit for those and its always a bit difficult when you're sampling people who may or may not have approved and can listen to your track; so at a minimum I'd recommend making it as best as possible and letting them know you've remixed in advance or at least when its done if you haven't asked already (although i dont THINK it should be a problem).

Definitely keep working on it and adding some more flavor and surprises to it as otherwise it sounds like a famegrab by taping on famous samples in an effort to be seen and I'm sure you want it to stand on its own feet and not discarded like that. ;) :geek:

Yeah, I've got only a few tracks and a couple melodies going right now. I'll be changing it up and messing around with stuff a bit more than I'm doing now for the final mix. The final song will likely be about twice this length or something, too; this is just the start. Also, in that middle section before the "Trot with me through the I can't remember" comes in, I want to add some vocals. I haven't finished writing them yet, though, and I don't know how I'll do them (as I am not an astonishingly good singer, don't have Melodyne, and don't have any really good connections among singers).

I'm probably going to talk to the original artists; at least pop them a message. I was thinking of doing it after the thing was done, but it does make sense to do so beforehand. If anyone big and important is reading this: First, I am flattered that you're bothering. Second, if you've made it in here, it's because you're my hero. And third, I mean absolutely no disrespect or violation of copyright or so on, and if you have any objections, I'll take you out of the thing and take down any offending previews and such.

The most interesting thing here so far has been making it work without pitch shifting; as I mentioned, I don't have Melodyne, so it sounds like garbage if I move anything so much as a half step either way. As such, I'm everywhere at once with chords and key. Which has been something of a challenge and has given it an interesting sound, as I'm not usually so freeform with chord structure.

And, incidentally, apparently Mic did indeed eat all those fucking apples. I hope I'm not abusing an in-joke I'm not in on here, but as far as I know, he did.

I'm with you in that sampling is almost always a tribute to the impact of that original piece of music, that it was significant for you want to even sample it. I know some people might think that copyright violation is an evil thing but i think the big thing is that you not profit from anything, you acknowledge where its coming from, and then ultimately its a tribute of some kind in finding fresh use of an old sample. I don't think sampling ever "damages" an original piece. But yeah you might want to just shoot them an pm in advance or once its done. They might even have some input on what the track could need to make it 20% cooler. ;)

Indeed. I shall message them, probably soon. And while I would love to make money off my music, it's not going to happen even if I try, so original artists- you needn't worry.

My pet artist, Enrico Dali, is working on the visuals to go with the thing, and it's sounding pretty cool. I was originally imagining a black background, with song titles, artist names and visuals popping up as the different samples come up in the music. And now he wants to use OC's to represent the different artists, which I get the impression he's having an interesting time with as not all of them seem to have them. I'll probably mention that in the PMs I send off, but does anyone else have brilliant ideas?
