<wip> <original> My First Song - Need Critiques and Tips

Postby Quix » 27 May 2012 20:01

Hi, I decided to try my hand at making music. It would mean a lot to mean a lot to me if you would listen to this song and give me some tips and critiques. This is my first song, and it's not mastered much at all, so there's a lot of room for improvement. I based this one on Pinkie Pie.

EDIT1: Changed the ending.
EDIT2: Changed the drumming from 0:30 to 0:47. Now on to mastering this beast!
EDIT3: Panned instruments and adjusted volumes. Is this ready for putting on Youtube?
EDIT4: LET THIS THREAD DIE. I'm going to be uploading the song on Youtube shortly.

I see that this is your first post, so allow me to welcome you to MLR(!) and direct you to the introduction thread, where you can say hi to everyone and be inundated in replies if our regular topic-spammers happen to get on anytime soon

And now, on to the track. WHY IS EVERYONE BETTER THAN ME AT MELODIES  But seriously, I really like the melodies and how much you varied everything in this song, it really keeps it interesting the whole way through. And it's so happy!

On the critiquing side, though, beyond your admission that it's not mastered at all, I'm going to tell you what I seem to tell every newcomer: Do some sound design, because it'll lend you a voice of your own to use in making your music that's more obvious than a composition technique or the like. Watch some Youtube tutorials if you have to, start out by tweaking synth presets if you have to, but a good thing for new producers to work towards before much else is a library of your own sounds.

You might also want to look into getting some packs of samples and the like, when you get to the point of learning drum processing and all that.

But for a first song, it's pretty good, and enough to make me interested in where you'll end up as a producer :D
Youtube -- Soundcloud -- Tumblr -- Bandcamp (new album out!)

I can't feel my brain.

It could stand some fleshing out. Moar synths, less places with low sound, less repetitiveness (moar progression). It kinda sounds chiptune-ish, which is cool, but chiptune is famous for progression.
The harmony is rather spot on, so all that's good.

The drums could use a little more volume, one idea to make it sound more chiptuney is to chuck a white noise hit in the snare. Layer the drums in general

The outro could use some work, don't just cut the sound off, make a new melody going down (or up, in some cases) to indicate completion.

This reminds me of me when I wasn't doing dubstep. On an unrelated note, I think I'm gonna go back to putting in a lot of midi work in my tracks

Thanks for the feedback!

I just updated the ending and reuploaded the song. The new Soundcloud link is in the OP. I'm going to try to follow your suggestions tomorrow.

Way better, bro. That bass is super poppy now, and everything sounds like it has a place. Good job.

I changed the drumming from 0:32 to 0:48, and I panned the instruments and adjusted volumes. Is this ready for putting on Youtube?

Also, the name. Does "Pinkified" sound good? Or should I go with something else?

This is actually very good one for the first your work. I remember myself making silly noises in FL like a year ago  I'd suggest you to delve deeper into music engineering, mixing, mastering and stuff. Yeah, that is vital subject for every musician.
This is a vintage signature. No, really!
