<Pony> <Original> Beyond - Feedback please :D

Postby Sarphog » 08 Mar 2012 18:52

Sorry if I accidentally the grammar, but I'm getting very tired.. And I write like a drunk when I'm about to fall asleep.

Anyway, I thought I'd post this so I could get some feedback while I'm sleeping.

Somehow inspired by Twilight and how she lives in the library.. Not really sure, but I had her reading in front of the fireplace in mind when making this.

I'm still a complete newbie, but don't hold back with the criticism. I've made a few patterns, and I know some of them don't fit good being next to each though, just didn't have time to make much more :P

Also.. The more I listen to this, the more familiar it gets. Anyone heard something similar to this anywhere else? I'll cry if I subconsciously stole someone else's melody :(

Last version of this track. Originally made it to improve my overall skills within music, which it feels like I have. Learned some EQing, reeverb, and a little bit on the notes. Feedback is still appreciated. I know that some of the parts might sound a bit.. Awkward, but.. Oh well ^^

This is the kind of music I like to listen to when I causally browse the inernet and stuff, I liked it but it sounds really dry and too heavy for the mood. Work will some eqing, use a low shelf to cut out some of the low end (around 400-500Hz). Put the piano closer to the center of the mix and add a chamber or plate reverb, keep it very natual and warm, put the wet signal of the reverb outside of the center of the mix. Then add another eq and bring out the highs with a bandaxall curve at 20kHz.

If you could make it longer it would be awesome, it feels a little short.

I have absolutely no knowledge when it comes to EQing, but I'll see what I can do. I'll also try extending the song; it's still far from done

Well then your in for a great adventure! Eqing will greatly improve your music and is essential knowledge imo. Here is a quick video that I suggest to everyone and will help you get you started, its more geared to EDM but you should find it quite usefull.

I've managed to extend it, I also EQ'ed it, and I'm pretty satisfied with the sound, but could you please explain 'reverb' a bit, or link me to somewhere I can learn it? Also.. 'Center of the mix'? .. Yeah, my knowledge when it comes to electronic music is pretty close to nada :P

Reminds me a bit on baroque music (for example J.S.Bach)...
It would recommend, to differentiate the velocity of the single parts/melodys, and generally no straight velocity.
Moreover, there are some hold pedals in the midi, which make it sound blurry sometimes.

Maybe you can upload a midi, and then I can show you what I mean ;-)

I think I fixed some of the blur after EQing, and sure I'll upload a midi, as soon as I know what it is and how to create one x]

Okay, reverb is kind of a very soft echo of the sound if you don't have a clue

Plug your piano to the mixer and choose Fruity Reverb 2. I'd recommed it because it has visualization unlike Fruity Reverb 1. For starters, you should try controlling three things, the "Dry", "Wet", and "Dec" parametres. "Dry" controls the original sound's volume, "Wet" controls the reverb's volume and the "Dec" controls how long the reverb will last. Also, drag the bucket in the plugin to shape the reverb's sound.

edit; forgot one thing, you can get the reverb off the center from the Stereo separation knob. It's right under the Dry and Wet knobs in the plugin

Getting a sound off the center is just basicly panning the sound to left and right. You could simply do this by cloning the pattern, and making the other sound left, and the other one right. You can also plug your piano on to a mixer and choose "Fruity Stereo Enhancer". This plugin basicly does the same thing, but faster. Fiddle around with the settings until it sounds good.

Thanks a ton. I'll try centering the sound^^

.. And now to figure out what a midi is!

- Edit -
So, a MIDI is just the notes written down.. Great.. It'll take a lot for me to create that, considering that I just got into creating music. I've never really had any interest beyond listening to it until now recently, so I barely know a thing :D

Its sounding much better with the reverb! I will say I am not a fan of this particular piano sound though, I dont know how to describe it but it just doesnt sound right.. What did you use to create the sound?

Just the standard FL keys in FL studio. Got any suggestion for a better piano plugin? :P

I use a free vst called mda Piano, I have acheived some decent results with it. When you use this one make sure to get come really natural big room reverb on it.
