<Original><Pony>The Sixth Sense (Twitcha-Twitch) Dubstep Mix

I'll be surprised if no-one used this idea already, I mean it's so perfect. Pinkie's tail twitch to alert her to something falling and well...this is dubstep.

It's my first song so I'd like to hear some ways I can improve. I can point out a few basic flaws (I.E. kick might be TOO punchy and the song is super repetitive), but overall I consider it a good track.

Oh, and if you hear the ringing in the Kick in the beginning, that happened as a result of it being uploaded to soundcloud. The original .wav file I uploaded does not have them, neither does the Mp3 I provided for download on the youtube page.

hey, this is very good for a first song! It's not all that repetitive. I'd just say that some of the higher synths need to stick out more. Also, try adding some filters to the some of the basses to give them a little more "crunch", and make them a little less smooth. The kicks could actually use some more punch to it, in my opinion. Just layer some other kicks, something with more treble to it, so the kicks can stand out a bit more.

I really like this. Keep up the work! =]

This is really good, you've got a terrific structure to the song, and a very interesting beat. The only thing it really needs is more...'punch you in the face'...if that makes any sense. The sidechaining is very well done, in my opinion, but I'm a sucker for side-chains. I agree with Mingus, maybe just bitcrush the bass a little more, and bring out the treble a tad.

That's my two cents, though. Take it or leave it.

Thanks for all the support!

I admit when I was designing the basses I was having a lot of trouble getting treble out of them (in the master eq I had about +5 db of gain in the 5 khz region with a pretty generous q of around 1-1.5).

As for my kick, I thought it had too much punch because of how aggressive I had the sidechain set up, maybe presence would be a better word? Annoyingly whenever I layer kick (that's three kicks you actually hear there) I get a lot of punch, which then subsides when I add any sort of treble over them (like a ride or a lead).

As for grittier basses, I'm using FL Studio 10 to make this and have found the default distortion plugins to be rather lacking. I only just recently got a good distortion unit and didn't have the chance to put it into this track. I'll keep that in mind with all my future dubstep tracks though, thanks!

I've found Harmless to be a quite fantastic default synth if you're looking for grittiness (It's also a good wobbler) but to get that filthy sound, consider throwing on something like Fruity Blood overdrive, that's a decent default bitcrusher, and I think it'll do what you're looking for. Obviously, there's better options, like ohmicide, but if you don't want to pay for it, or have an uneasiness with taking advantage of the high-seas discount The Pirate Bay offers, then Blood Overdrive is a good choice.

tl;dr, use blood overdrive

From my experience, trying to do external EQ on the basses always tends to ruin the quality of it for me, haha. Try to just fix the bass from inside the synth itself, then do some fine tuning on the outside/master EQ. Also in EQing, try to think of what frequencies to remove, instead of what to increase. This has always been helpful for me in trying to get the best sound I can get. =]
