<remix> Giggle at the Ghostly Remix

Postby DitzyRhythm » 12 Nov 2011 11:07

Here we go. Almost 4 months after I originally posted this thread, I've completed the remix.

The main few differences between this version and the last one I posted are that I made some tweaks to the bass synth, changed out the drums for better sounding ones, and lengthened some parts.

Enjoy.

Hi, everypony!

So, this is the first real remix I've done. I've dabbled in other stuff (orchestral, movie soundtrack-esque stuff, some of which is also on my SoundCloud) and wanted to give this a shot.

Anyway, this is what I'm working on right now. Not done yet, still things that need to be tweaked here and there, whole parts that need to be added (around the 0:45 mark is a big one), levels need to be adjusted, and general work on it just needs to be done. But I figured I'd post what I have so far and get some opinions from the experts!

This is also my first time working with Ableton Live (I used GarageBand before that), so if you guys have any general tips for me, that'd be fantastic, as I'm probably only using about 5% of what it can do.

Alright, I'll shut now up so that you guys can listen to what I've created.

Thanks!

Sounds good to me. At 0:48 I think you should apply a band/high-pass filter to master track or just the vocals for the not added yet part, then get some gating for the "aaaaaaaaall" part
It's what came to my mind.

If you need ableton live help, add me on skype (bartekko6), but I'm European, so if you're American you'll be better off adding Aussie.

I love the chords structure, it's really fun. Also, that's the cutest Hi-Hat sample I've ever heard, love it.

Only suggestion would be increasing the vocals volume, possibly apply a notched Eq boost in the upper thousands of mabye 1.5dB and cutting that same area from the rest of your patches by about the same amount, just so they shine through a bit more.

Otherwise though, this sounds awesome. Oh, and welcome to the forums.

Not bad! I liked the chord progression, too. =)

Only two things I have in the way of criticism is that there's a large stretch during the verse that doesn't really seem to go anywhere. If you weren't planning to already, maybe you can add more stuff there to vary things a little bit?

And purely IMO, but those synths that go through the whole thing could use a little bit more attack, or maybe some more separation between the notes. It would bring out the rhythm a little more, I think, so feel free to try it, feel free to ignore me on that one.

It's stuff like this that makes me wish I worked primarily with a different medium.

Well then, after about 2 months, I'm back with an improved version of this track. I've gone through and taken some of your advice, and have a better result overall, but I think it could still use some work. I've also gone out an bought a copy of Massive, and replaced a couple of synths in this song with that, and I think they sound better (yay!).

Anyway, have a listen and let me know what you think.

Yay Massive is aweomse isn't it! This sounds noticeably better than your rough draft. The vocals are where they need to be level and EQ wise (I love the extra charcters throwing in their 2 cents), they are better synths, and I like the happy and playful vibe. Could be a little more spread out with a bridge and some repetition as it felt a little rushed and cluttered at the short duration but that's up to you. Good job.

Oh, yeah, Massive is really nice. I just need to learn it completely.

The idea is that the Party With Pinkie clip was the bridge part, leading up to that full chorus, but I feel like it should be separated some from the first chorus. I'll play with it some and see how it goes. I've also tweaked things to draw it out a little more, adding some of that repetition that you were talking about.

I think I'm getting closer to final product that I'm happy with. The fun part is going to be coming up with a way to end it. I'll play with it more before posting another draft.

The newer one has a great sound, a clear improvement from the previous. Though I will say I'm a bit more partial to the suppressed-sounding (if that's the right term) vocals in the first one.
