Another short one. Another part of my weekly experiment series. I made this in about 5 hours.

Sounds good! I like the energy, the tone of the guitars, and it's got a nice 90s video game vibe to it. I think that it could use a bit more interest in the stereo field though, since it seems everything is panned to the center (which is understandable considering it was done in 5 hours). And a little more bass couldn't hurt.

It would fit well as a prelude or interlude to a reimagining of the music from Dr. Wily stage 1 from Mega Man 2.

I find it funny how it ended up sounding so much like Mega Man when I was worried it would sound too much like Iron Maiden.

Everything is not actually panned to the center. The lead guitar is double tracked and panned left and right, there's two harmony parts that are slightly panned, and there's two hekka quiet organ parts that are panned. For the most part I couldn't push anything too far without making it lopsided, though.

And the drums were the biggest hassle. I played it on an electronic kit with Superior Drummer. Superior Drummer has the option to render each microphone separately including the bleed. The hi-hat ended up being really loud in every microphone. More so than when I record live drums. I couldn't gate and compress the snare the way I like, and I had to use one of the room mics to get more cymbals, which is why they're mono and washed out.

That happens to me all the time. I'll be using something as a reference while I write, be afraid that it will sound too much like that, then realize halfway through that it sounds like something else that I wasn't even listening to. Then I have to rescue it from sounding too much like that.

I actually haven't listened to Iron Maiden in a long time. When I realized my piece would sound similar to Iron Maiden I specifically avoided them, lest they be the only thing I could hear in my head.

As a writer I find it important to listen to a lot of new music every day, and to not listen to the same music too much because it plays with your mind's expectations until you can't hear it any other way. I still have a hard time not plagiarizing the Guitar Hero soundtrack after playing through it so many times.

I absolutely love the videogame feel to this song. It sounds so amazing. Well composed, and the mixing is pretty decent as well. Just mix some of the widening or such, and it's golden.
