<Pony> <Symmetric Orchestral> Sister Suite

Postby VaporBlaze » 04 Jul 2013 08:23

This is my first song to be made using the Push as intended: build a collection of clips, use session view to put together a complete song, then tweak in the timeline.

I composed the song to represent Celestia raising the sun with the first violin solo, which is fast and up beat, then Luna lowering the moon during the flute solo which is more mellow and "cool". Then, I thought about how night and day is a cycle, and that I could try to capture both halves in the same song. I reversed the notation of each midi clip, and mirrored the order that the clips come in to create a second half, then I switched which solo piece each instrument played (and did some slight recomposition to make the pieces fit the instruments).

I know it's on the long side, if you just listen to the first half you will get the gist of the song, but I really feel like the second half does a good job of "resolving" the song.

Critique and criticism is welcome!

OH GAWD TEN MINUTES

I kid, I kid.

The intro is nice and cool, I like the reversed things (bells?). That weird thing that sounds like the click of a kick is a bit out of place I think. I really like the ambiance you're building here though. Those violins (I think) are a a bit loud. That piano is playing some dissonant notes or something, or it's clashing with the bells, I can't tell. I like those violins, they're nice sounding and not too loud. That's a really interesting high pitched thing in the background that I just noticed. That flute may also be a bit loud. I'm not sure what that clicky thing is supposed to be doing but it's there again. The song gets a bit repetitive around the 3 minute mark, but it's fine considering you introduced those flutes there. I think the other elements faded out too quickly there. Those drums come completely out of nowhere, I really didn't expect them, especially that hat. Flutes themselves seem fine, but they drop out too quickly, maybe add some release at the end of their solo part. Bringing in the other elements went fine, but this part is repetitive despite the addition of the flute. Then you go to a chill part where most of the elements drop out, and that does good at breaking up the repetitiveness. And then the awesome reversed bells (?) again :3. I think you could do with changing the timbre of that high pitched background synth (sorry for not being able to describe it better, but I think I heard something similar in Strobe by deadmau5 if that helps at all). Again those left-panned violin staccatos are a bit loud. I don't like the violin solo as much as the flute solo (well, not really solos but you know what I mean :3). I don't know, I just feel like it doesn't flow as well there. After that when you reintroduce the flute and they play together for a bit it's nice sounding. I do like that white noise-y synth hat thing you've been opening and closing for much of the song. The outro is a bit long but does good at resolving the song, good job.

Overall: I enjoyed it quite a bit. I must not have been hearing right or got used to it, as I didn't hear any dissonance later in the song (I realize dissonance can be used well, I've done that myself, but I'm referring to 'bad' dissonance). There were a few mixing issues (most notably the violin staccatos) but not enough to interfere with my enjoyment of the song. I'd give it 11.8 Destructo Discs out of 14.

Thank's for the in depth critique, I know it's a lot to ask to expect someone to listen to the whole thing especially because the the second half is basically (no, literally) the first half backwards.

I can definitely agree that the violin was a bit loud. I jacked them up in the mix because I wanted the first violin "solo" to be really powerful and hair raising.

The drums being unexpected is a fair point, I wanted to shift the perceived tempo of the chill flute part to something more slow and steady. The drums were supposed to be something kind of like a marching band's drums, in order to contrast the faster clicky whatever it is that was pervasive during the violin solo.

I also agree that the second violin "solo" was kind of awkward sounding. I took the the first flute solo and reversed the notation, then cleaned it up a bit to be played on a legato flute. I think that the flute playing the reversed first violin solo turned out far, far better than the violin playing the reversed first flute solo.

I know what you mean when you refer to the high-ish backgroudn synth (kind of poppy, very atmospheric). I used that and the clicky thing to make the track a bit more diverse contrasted with other orchestral pieces, to make it a bit more energetic.

The dissonance in the piano was on purpose to contrast the more melodious flute and violin, and the notation was structured to be complimented by the bells in non dissonant ways, but perhaps it was a little too much.

Again, thank you so much for the feedback, you caught many things that I had previously not recognized but definitely agree with.

Thanks, I really appreciate it! Glad to see I'm not the only one that gets the feels when I listen to it (and I apologize for how narcissistic that must sound). At any rate, it makes me feel really happy to hear it that you liked it so much.
