zorg's Massive Collab Idea - Elements of Harmony

[Senator Myth]

All that joking around about people on this website representing the Element of (Musical Genre) gave me an idea: a massive collaboration (of more than five people probably) that combines the different musical genres we all use into a unified song with a unified theme. It would be entirely original, and we would sow together sections of dubstep and chiptune, tonal and atonal classical music, orchestral and electronic so that they flowed smoothly and coherently tomorrow.

And then bring all of them together for big finish, combining these elements into one big part with all the pieces working harmoniously.

OBVIOUSLY THIS WILL BE A HUGE CHALLENGE, but I think it'd be worth it and interesting and fun to make a sort of community song that demonstrates how diverse this musical community is. What do you think? Do you want to represent a specific element? Leave your thoughts and ideas in this thread!

Well I'll be the first to say that this is a great idea (actualy I suggested that idea a week or two back, but no one saw it )

I'd like to represent the element of dubstep, unless somepony wants it more than I do, then I'll negotiate.

Question time:
1. What length should ones part be?
2. Who's gonna mix all of them together? That a responsible and hard thing. (actualy I could try to do it, but I've never done a mix, but want to try)

Well, I guess I'll be atonal classical...but if so, I can only start in a few weeks time! I have the rest of the remix war collab. to do, a cello festival to participate in (composer, not cellist!) and I'm back at Uni next week, so I need to organise a lot of stuff! I'm pretty swamped music wise for the next week or two as a result...

This sounds awesome. Maybe I can be the element of electro house and use samples from the classical and chiptune parts for my own.

I'd imagine that the individual pieces would be about a minute or two long, probably. It'd be making them segue seamlessly that would be tough. And DrDissonance, don't worry, this would be a VERY long term project, probably at least a month. Right now I'm just checking for interest, and we can get some details hammered out here once more people step forward.

Since I don't really know what element I'd represent, and it's my idea, I think I'd be the one to attempt to mix everything together, and just to keep the project organized in general.

What am I getting myself into.

Since it was MY idea, and I'LL be the one coordinating everything, I'LL decide what theme will use and who does what and when, thank you very much!

Jesting aside, I only just now realized (when I looked it up) that there is a chordal motif that represents the Elements of Harmony in the second episode. It receives many variations, and it /could/ work. Although I would probably prefer a melody if possible, I'll just run this here by everyone:

You can hear it, can't you? It's there just before she breaks it, gets darker when Nightmare Moon's being all evil n junk, and generally just permeates that whole part of the episode. A motif! What do you guys think?

If you're talking about the one that goes C G Ab Eb C, that's the Nightmare Moon theme. =P Not hearing an Elements theme, though I'd have to go through the whole vocal-less episode to figure that on my own...

I /greatly/ prefer motifs to melodies, though if you come up with a melody, I'll just turn a prominent idea in that melody into a motif and use that. =P

Because atonal classical is already taken, I could always do atonal jazz. Or fusion jazz in general.

No, I definitely hear a theme. Bear in mind that my aural skills aren't awesome, but it seems to be going C D B E there at the very beginning. JUST before Nightmare Moon breaks the Elements. The E gets cut short... That basic idea gets repeated throughout this scene.

And I don't even hear what theme YOU'RE talking about. =P If explaining fails, then I'll whip out my DAW and spend a few hours transcribing what I'm hearing, and then posting it on this board for all to hear. Probably not tonight though, it's getting late.

Edit: It's not actually JUST before Nightmare Moon breaks the Elements, it's just before Twilight says "WHere's the sixth Element?" CURSE MY STUPIDITY

This obviously doesn't clash with orchestral, because Mozart is well known to use synths in his pieces.

The Idea I had was that each section starts out with material (Such as the MLP theme), or material that would fit with everything else and all of the genre's beginning thematic material comes together sort of like in this video, but obviously it might be quite something different



I'd like you to draw your attention to 0:30, 1:07, 1:50, and 2:33 when each standalone theme is presented

Now go to 3:21 and each standalone line is put together for AWESOME.

Yes, same midi or stems for everypony and we have kind of a nice synergy between all tracks.
