This quickly became the busiest week I terms of work and commitments. Got two live shows, near full time work and have to judge for an album! 5 songs left, will get them done tomorrow.

I will say its tough judging one of these things as i know just about everyone put a solid effort into their tracks. Kyoga's judging criteria really is a bit more serious then your standard event and there was a lot of diverse entries that really showed off all levels of musical showmanship. In the end it came down to who had the best tracks of the bunch and who we 4 agreed were ahead of the pack. If you missed getting in look at what you can do better, fix those areas, and release it on your own. Don't beat yourself up if you missed the cut because its just one event, one track, and there's always ways to learn and improve.

improve? ha! not in a million years i could i dont hear things that others do everything is fucked up for me and theres nothing i can do about it i cant just grow new ears and relying on someone for my mixing is just pointless and a waste of time i should of never gotten into music in the first place

oooh, comments

if I may reply to a few in this thread:
literally every judge wrote:ur song is 2 crunchy

yeah yeah jeez, lol. I get this comment a lot, for some reason.
if you ask me, I think distortion adds character, even in ambient tunes.
especially in ambient tunes.

but hey ok

Ouch, that snare is annoyingly nasal - so is the EP.
...nasal? what?

wow, songs over... that was fast, not necessarily a good or bad thing though. It kinda felt too soon and somewhat abrupt.

regarding that and similar comments:
that was kind of my intention.
the song's titled "eating dreamers"

the idea is that, somewhere in the aether, are monsters that will attack your dream-self if you wander too close.
if you're eaten by one of these, you never dream again.
but the last minutes of your dream, as your being eaten, are beautiful. euphoric, even.
then it ends.
and the memory of your last dream fades away, as memories are wont to do.
and you live a normal life, nothing out of the ordinary except that, when asked, you often reply with, "I never remember any of my dreams".
and nobody thinks anything of it, since it's so common.
and really, that's ok.
life goes on for you, and the monster can live on with the sustenance you (perhaps unwittingly) provided it.

(kinda) Not related, but I'm a fan of the judging system. It's probably pretty standard but I just like how easy to follow and logical it is.

Also I might try for this if there's a SSIII.

I'll be largely studying next year, but I can try pull something together. Odds are I'm gonna pick up a book on music theory or something (goodness knows I could stand to improve my knowledge of the theory), so hopefully that'll help. Hell I might even meet some people irl I could collab with given that I'll be studying audio.

ok cool

tbh this is a bit confusing @_@

apparently you lost access to the SS1 page from last year?

weird choice but I guess you can be like "this is an album I organized which is why it's on my official page" and itd be cool

anyway, will enthusiastically check out the album in about 19 hours, when I have a spare block of time :D

nah, you were doing pretty rad right up until the actual bandcamp release

mainly it seems like you forgot to gather a bunch of details like "how exactly do you want your name to appear on the album"
the minor detail that gets the major complaints :P

iron that out and figure out an alternate download for the free-download people and you should be rolling just fine.

oh also make sure you share this link:
https://officialkyoga.bandcamp.com/albu ... pectrum-ii

future-proof things a bit

then you'll be rolling just fine :D

this is too powerful to be part of such a comp

ok ok... but then

it never built into something big and powerfull

The ending is quite abrubt too but thats nothing in comparion to how weak the track was.

Gotta say, enjoyed listening to ALL of these tracks. I was talking earlier in the Judge chat, and I exclaimed how turning down a track is awful - because no matter your skill level, all artists spent an equal amount of effort on their song. The only variable that differs is your experience/skill level (which of course, only betters with practise). So don't hide your DAW. (I'm talking to you Facade! There were so many good elements to your song, but you need to work on mixing a bit. The sound design was really cool.)

To be honest, I can't pick a favourite. Everyone brought such diversity to the album. I really enjoyed "Fading Light" and other straightforward songs - I also loved the more experimental tracks - basically anything that truly showed your creativity.

As a general criticism, I think we need to spend some time getting to know mixing. I think that was the weak spot of most entries.

(Also frick, I forgot to tell Kyoga to make sci's name lowercase, haha. Same issue last year... sorry sci!)

Anyway, SSIII is rather far away.
Anybody have ideas for an album until then? I tried to make a funk album last year but it didn't go so well (partly due to lack of musicians into the genre and my failure to advertise it properly.)

Any ideas for a new album to tie us over until next year?
