CHALLENGE: 7/4 EDM Extravaganza!

Postby NeonJalapeno » 15 Sep 2012 10:19

Everywhere I go, I see EDM in plain old 4/4; dubstep is based around a two-step pattern, electro and house are based around a four-on-the-floor pattern, hardstyle is just 4/4 swung, and so on. Being a huge fan of uncommon time signatures, I find this to be a bit irritating at times (ignoring the hypocrisy in that I've never made an EDM song in uncommon time). So, I whipped up a short drum beat in 7/4, and that's where you come in.

I want to see what you all can come up with, making an EDM song on top of this 7/4 drum loop. You can alter it in any way, shape, and form, as long as the end result is still 7/4. What counts as EDM? Well, anything that normally would be 4/4! Electro, House, Dubstep, Hardstyle, Drum and Bass, etc.

Here's the 7/4 drum beat.
(It's 128 bpm, but you can alter the bpm as you please.)

Your goal is to take that drum beat and use it as the basis for your song!

Deadline: October 15th

There's not going to be any reward for the best entry, or anything like that. I just want to see what MLR can come up with in one month!

Note: Anybody who'd just be willing to make another 7/4 drum beat will be featured here for people to use, because I'm sure my beat sucks.

7/4 is best time signature. Why is there not more stuff like this?
I'm rather busy, but I'll see if I can come up with something.

Breakcore is EDM, and it's almost never 4/4... Although it isn't that popular a genre, especially to produce.

Eh, I might do this if I get the time.

Hence why I specified it be a genre of EDM that normally IS in 4/4. :3

I think I'm going to enter this sometime later, because I love odd times to heck, ut in the meantime, I went ahead and made a drumbeat in 7/4 that I think could be pretty useable here. I'll go ahead and link it here, enjoy guys!

I'll try it out, it sounds fun! :)

I think that 4/4 and 3/4 is popular because it's not so irritating to count and it's natural to the human ear, strange key signature and bpm changes can confuse us, and I really hate that. But It's neat to have music with weird time signature, I once tried to make a 3/17 song!

But this sounds like a hipster challenge, it really does.

This actually is quite challenging, but I'm always looking for ways to push the boundaries.

UPDATE: Holy crap! It was incredibly difficult and discomforting at first, but once I found a catchy beat and melody, I actually started having fun with it! Reminds me when I figured out 3/4 time for my song in the Seeds of Kindness album. Thanks NeonJalapeno for the challenge!

Here's what I got so far.

I'm not entirely sure if this is still considered EDM though. Can you picture it being played in a club?

Most definitely... but only in niche clubs for hipsters who know how to dance to 7/4. (I mean this as a compliment.)
As for if it's still EDM... does putting it in an uncommon, uneven time sig make it IDM? Nobody knows~

Cherax status update: I have great ambitions for my entry which mean it won't be done by the deadline, but since it's not actually a competition, it doesn't really matter!

GODSPEED.

Anyhoo. I'm locking myself in my room and finishing (well, starting) an overdue essay today and tomorrow. I won't be working on this any more before the deadline, so have a li'l taste. Here's what you need to know when evaluating this WIP: 1) the song's much longer than this; 2) I intend for it to have sexy, sexy vocals; 3) I also intend to learn how to use Massive and actually make good bass tones; and 4) I've never programmed drums quite like this, so FEEDBACK PLS.

Really liking what people are posting. I find this much more interesting then 4 to the floor beats. I used to love them, but they are so overused, and simple, that they get old after a while.

I didn't get around to finishing my song, too much stuff going on. But as Neon said, it's more of a challenge then a contest, but I got the start of a potentially cool song either way.
