Mallard-does-BP style reviews GO
Decibelle - {√All Things}
Weh. Within the first few seconds, I hear modern talking, and a repetitive electro riff. Now, I'd like this pad if it didn't seem to be clipping all over the shop. Pads dont distort well, if y'ask me. It seems like you invited TLT round too, since my kicks are being followed rather reliably with snares. Noticeable clipping and a lack of dynamics.
And The Rainfall - Over the Reals
I was expecting this to be absolutely run of the mill brostep schlock - which in way is exactly what it is. But it also has a little sprinkle of magic. It has a bit of that old dubstep feel, it has that esecence of minimalism, chopped in vocal samples and dark atmosphere that make if feel just that touch bit like the good old dubstep of old, before the DUB entirely fell away from the step.
Then about half way through the track, it kind of loses its way once more, for my money. The whirring hoover bass moves yet further into the midrange. I think I kind of knock off on just about every brostep track at the 3 minute mark though. When it starts clipping, it becomes annoying to listen to hoovers screaming at you after a while.
TripleBlueshell - E55
Okay, I'm sorry TripleBlueshell, but what are you doing here? You've balked at all the awesome sgap tracks in toastbeard... you're the last person who should be anywhere near a sgap album and it's showing here, man. You've ticked the sgap boxes of modern talking, glitch abuse, and all that here, but there's no deeper understanding of what makes sgap tracks good. THat shaker in paticular is really annoying, and this is just... a wall of sound. You're a lyrics and singing guy. You do the lighter thing well, it's a bit elevator, but what you do has a place, and it's not on a so-called-sgap album. The clipping ruins the dynamics.
ProfoundTwi - Without Definition
I love that, because that's really what this genre was originally about, stripping house down to its bare minimum, and replacing all the space with these cool solo leads. What artists seem to fail to realize today is just how much sonic space unfiltered waveforms take up YET STILL THEY ADD TO THE WALL OF SOUND.
But after that buildup, it's a total mess. The distorted midrangey bass sound just bleeds all over the mix and destroys any dynamics the track could have had. And it started out so promising with that unpretentious saw synth! That being said, I don't hear much else interesting beyond all that. Lots of clipping.
Kreühn Pöny - Music With Different Parts (for SoGreatandPowerful)
AAAA volume difference. Whoever compiled this album, you really should normalize between tracks! We have some very muffled breaks swiming underneath the epic pads, rising back up through the filter... perhaps a little far. it's starting to clip! Loudmodernmastering.wav Yeah holy shit man, this is clipping something awful. Stop trying to make your tracks as loud as possible, leave some headroom and let people turn up the sound on their cards.
Facexplodie - PPSREMIX
Hitting play, we launch into a bouncy half-time beat! Which could take us anywhere, really. AND THAT QUOTE FROM DUKE NUKEM WHICH IS ORIGINALLY FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE. When it drops though, I gotta say, I don't like where things go.
Okay, I may be being a little sarky, because there are some nice things in here. the vocal slices sit nicely, and the drums, despite that pattern being so very well trod at this point are at least nicely put together, and everything sits well in the mix. But sorry bro. This is just screaming right at me with no finesse, everything is squashed into the midrange, there's no regard for mixing, dynamics, sound design or anything really. This is just a mess of differnt CLIPPING distorted sounds.
Evdog - E33 (Coolness, Awesomeness, Radicalness)
HOLY VOCAL SLICING BATMAN. HOLY GLITCH ROBIN. This is the sort of thing Sori 52 should have been made of, and it stomps major ass. Incredibly high speed glitch work here has my head pounding like fuck, YES SOME SHOW DIALOGUE SYNC'D TO THE BEAT. MAY THE BEST PET WIN INFUCKINGDEED. Oh god I'm crying tears of rainbows and joy and my head is bouncing. This is what sgap should make me feel like. I love you, Evdog. BUILDING IT UP AGAIN WE HAVE SOME MAJOR AMEN ASSHAULAGE

I will tell this story to my grandfoals

slight clipping @ 1:50 tho, watch those dynamics
Freewave Adores SGAP - The Standard Model (Could Be Magic Mix)
So I've heard much talk of so called Freewavegate, and how this track is not only his weakest work, but totally doesn't fit the theme of the album. I WILL TRY AND PUT THIS PREDISPOSITION ASSIDE WHILST LISTENING.
Ha. Jill of the Jungle called, she wants that bassline back. Freewave, your other songs called, they need their beat back. It's only going to stretch so far you know... Damn. This really is incredibly half arsed. barely 2 and a half mintues long, consiting mostly of the same repeated beat, bass and arpeggios. Despite the insistance of the Sori 52 organizers that the tracks were blind selected, with the listeners not knowing which aritst they were listening to, I struggle to believe that was really true in this case. It's as obviously Freewave as it is obviously lazy, and as obviously chosen for the name alone as it's obvious this was made in an hour at most. Obvious clipping and brickwall mastering squashed the dynamics.
mycutiemarkisagun + Rhyme Flow - The Raindrop Model
The elevator pop of Bronydom on a sgap album? Well, okay then, this is a remix... but your voice is pretty nice. I can't fault you on that one. But similar to mcmiag's originals, this remix is entirely derivative and uninspired. The mixing sounds so dodgy.
This song is a lot of sinewaves. Dropping into a... oh so entirely undynamic hi-hat pattern that I presume is an attempt at the good ol' drum and bass 2-step pattern. And then they come back in at random! ANd some piano! Oh dear, this looks like a man who was trying to check a load of boxes. But oh gosh, at 2:06 it feels like the record just... skipped? What happened there man, it's kind of random. There's clipping throughout and I am getting a general feel of stuffy mastering on this tune, it's suffering from a lack of dynamics.
SoGreatAndPowerful - On My Own (AbranteDr Remix)
I'm not sure really what to make of this. It seems to be doing that new-to-FL studio thing of abusing the arpeggiator to make arps that don't really go anywhere or do anything than fill space in the mix. I'm not sure what to make of this really. There's not much of a tune to it, there's not much care to create interesting sounds, and just seems to hack around at random. Let your mixes breathe, people. Not every peak has to touch the celing. No dynamics and bad clipping.
Le Soldat Pony - E30 (Love and Admiration)
Ahaha, metalcore. I'll leave this one for somepony else <3 (i heard clipping tho)
F3nning - Evil Enchantress
There's a competent array of sounds here, and not much to complain about in the mixing, but everything happens at complete random and it's just a compositional disaster in which every modern fidgety synth and cliche has been crammed into just under 4 minutes. Ah, tits. I'll forgive it though with that rather nice breakdown. But this track seems to be suffering from the all too common break-and-build syndrome, where it feels the need to keep the listener's attention by breaking down and building up again ad infintium... you really don't need to do that. it's tedious, and leave you never knowing how to dance to it! It's just amateurish and feels like you're trying too hard to impress. Normally, I'm one to praise repetition, but this really does just have the same 5 piano notes rolling throughout the track, which is of course, very monotonous. This just didn't really do much for me in the end. Almost no dynamics to speak of and tons of clipping.
Markelius - Solacium
I feel like I'm a 12 year old who's just fastforwarded to the drop of the latest HUGE SKRLX DOCTOR P TUNE as soon as I hit play. There's no tension, buildup or nuffin. We're just straight into heavy bass drop. This track is entirely dominated by its snare drum that drowns out everything out in its booming. Funily enough the build up seems to occur after this initial segment, but it's like the main gimmick has been given away already. Now I will give credit to the fact that Markelius is very young, and damn man, you're producing better stuff than I was when I was 14 for sure, but there's such a lack of regard to the structuring that makes this kinda music good, I just gotta hang my head a little.
The breakdown at 1:50 with the nice chippy sounds and strings makes me wonder though... good things could be happening here! But once again, it's so loud it's quite plainly clipping, and the sheer volume of it prevents any real enjoyment of any attempted dynamics, I do believe this is a bad case of brickwall mastering, that modern trend of compressing in every single peak into the song and maximizing the volume until there is no dynamics left!
