I have always kept my kicks at the default C note... is this bad practice? Should I change it sometimes or does it not really matter?

Smyler, unless you're doing a genre with pitched kicks (hardstyle or gabber being the most prominent), you should probably keep your kicks on the default note. Generally, pitch shifting kick samples is a bad idea. Snares in trap are often pitched and rolled though, so there's that.

So basically if you want to pitch a kick you should use a synth kick and not samples, and you don't need to pitch a kick unless you're doing a specific few genres.
