Deadmau5 Synth

Postby Ptepix » 04 Feb 2013 11:04

Ok...this synth has baffled me for the longest time. It is from City in Florida and it is the higher sound in the main part.

It is at 2:15

And for some amazing reason this embed isn't working either

Mod: Fixed :)

Start reading - http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/may99/a ... nthsec.htm

Its a very long read but by the end of it (or to the point where it becomes another language) you will understand more about synths than you may have ever wanted to know.

But a lot of ability in sound design comes from experience. I know just about every function in Massive and Sytrus and Cyclop, and my sound design only improved a little. So read up on that and synth manuals and stuff, but more importantly, practice.

I should've added that reading the article won't make you better at synthesis, it will help you understand what the parts of a synth mean (like oscillators, filters, envelopes). Taking that knowledge will help you move around a synth faster, like "I need a filter to cut out the high frequencies" so you go add a low pass filter to cut out those high frequencies. Practice and study.

It's a very busy mix, that's for sure. To me, it sounds like the bass sounds have all been routed through a bus, and there is some processing going on on the overall sound, mostly likely an overdrive or clip distortion. You would have to experiment. These are also most likely analog waveforms too, taken from a hardware synth, they're very clean. You should be able to come up with something very similar by playing intervals of thirds with saw waves, the lower one sounds layered/chorused, and the top one seems quite dry.

Certainly huge amount of FM going on. Can't help you much beyond that, as I find results using FM unpredictable.

Augh! I'm sorry XD I was pretty sure that the base preset was technically a saw...which is why I was confused :P

Ok...will mess with some stuff. I tried searching for pretty much any tutorial on anything similar for an hour before posting here lol :3

But this will probably be more helpful in the long run

Dude, you are completely right. When you open Massive, it gives you a saw wave. I don't know whats up with all of these reactions. That's like making fun of someone for calling ice "frozen water".

The way he phrased it made it sound like he thought a saw wave was a Massive preset. And it's not even close to making fun of someone for calling ice 'frozen water'. Not all of us know what the default Massive preset is (me included), while a saw wave is a basic, fundamental waveform.
