If you use Reason, the Radical Piano rack extension is pretty, erm, radical.

FL Keys is OK, but it has limited presets and affects, but it's free and all so whatever. I don't know of any synths that are piano synths besides FL Keys and I guess the one mentioned above by Cyrricky. My best advice would be to get Kontakt and find a good piano library on there.

It depends what you want. If you want some expressive, Pianos Gold, from East West, Emotional Piano from Soundiron and The Giant from Native Instruments are all good choices. Native Instruments also do a bunch of studio grade piano's, one of which I recommend is Alicia's Keys, lot's of very nice natural scripting in it to make it very playable, but sits well in a studio mix.

I've had a listen to FL Keys.. it sounds awful.

Oh, this is free, too:

And the full thing isn't that expensive, and it sounds pretty nice.

I always tend to use Emotional Piano in my works, but I occasionally switch to the F Grand when I want something with more oomph:

(You will need an iLok for it! Beware!)

A friend of mine keeps recommending the Ebony Concert Grand, which looks and sounds quite nice.
The most expensive one has 127 layers as well...wtf, that must have been so painfully boring to make.

(You will need the full version of Kontakt for it! Beware!)

I personally go with FL Keys. I find that it, with some EQ'ing, gets that job done.

I've recently discovered Addictive Keys (Lavender posted this) for me. They offer a 49 keys demo version which is already well usable and sounds amazingly warm and pure.

I own EZkeys Grand Piano, and it's pretty nice. For the cheapest though, it seems that NI's libraries are good and have the lowest cost. Alicia's Keys and The Giant sound good and are just over $100 which is pretty cheap for Sample libraries.

FL Keys really is garbage as an aside. I used to use it all the time while I worked up the cash for better things, but it's just awful otherwise. EQ/effects can't polish a turd. Crap in, crap out as the saying goes.

Also, EZkeys has the added bonus of having a few simplistic midi progressions that you can switch the key of however you choose. It's pretty lazy, but if you want to bang out a piano track that you want to sing along to, it's great/convenient. Just don't rely on it to write the next great song for you.

I'm surprised no one mentioned S1 Piano (http://www.cubic-audio.info/node/3)
Personally, I say this is something you should try out. Its a 'bright' sounding piano. S1P is free but since you're looking for something to buy, Evolution all the way! Its not a dedicated piano but the piano sounds is absolutely amazing!

The Korg bundle is a good deal. I think you can get it for free from one of their midi controllers which are also decent.

Id say sonik synth 2 if anything. Its not strictly piano but it has some really nice sounds in it. On the other hand it comes with a pretty big price tag =/

DAW: Fl Studio
Favorite VST's: Philharmonik, Piano One, Orchestral, Sonik Synth 2, Jessie's Music Box.

Pah. Yamaha CP80. Dance Piano.

CP80 is gorgeous if you process it right. I use either a transient shaper to add release, or put a wet reverb on it, then apply a hard compressor. Gives it a really sharp attack and sounds wonderfully crisp when layered with an acoustic piano. Listen to Arrivederci if you want an example of that. <3

And when I said the M1 was heavy, i meant the actual keyboard, the real thing. I used to have one on loan in college, and it was really, really heavy to carry around!

yeah I figured. Also like some Dx7 piano sounds as well. If I had the money and want some realistic pianos, I'd go for the Berlin piano for Kontakt. It just sounds so soft....

Alicias Keys is great when it comes to the price-performance ratio IMO.

First I got FL Keys too because it came free with the FL Bundle and it definitely is crap, you can't fix that with EQing and stuff. If you put a wonderful flower on shit, it's still shit.

Later I got the mda Piano, a free vst and I warn you to not get it. It sounded better than FL Keys but every second time I opened a projectfile with an instance of it, the file crashed. This was just really really bugging.

Alicia's Keys were mentioned, as well as The Giant, but what about any of the other pianos from NI? Are they nowhere near as good as Alicia's Keys or The Giant?
