Probably the best all purpose soft synth you can own, get to know it good and it will never fail you. It ranks number one on music radars top ten software synthesizers.

Is Absynth one of the best NI synths? I've had Massive for quite a while, and I've had my eyes on either FM8, but I'm not sure about each one. Massive is extremely popular, but I don't think that's the BEST synth NI has to offer.

I can't comment on Absynth, but I've used FM8 on one of my teacher's laptop and it's extremely good. I'd get it, personally.

Absynth is really powerful. While its easiest to do soundscapes with, you can make basically any sound with it, or at least most stuff massive is capable of. If you use it for leads and stuff your bound to find some unique sounds too, since so few use it.

I'm looking at Sylenth1 as my next software investment. I reckon it'd be pretty cool if I could go hybrid digital/hardware with my music.

What has given Absynth the popular association of soundscapes? Surely, it is capable of more than soundscapes, and most other synths can make soundscapes and ambient stuff as well. I am very much interested in creating unique ambient sounds and pads, as well as atmospheric effects, but is that mostly what Absynth is worth?

For me it's just that's what I used to use it for and that was pretty much it. I agree that it's not the best but imo the easiest... although now after switching to logic I use Sculpture.

This is the synth I use the most. Its pretty easy to get the hand of and can do a lot.

I've recently become a fan of the Korg Legacy Collection. Especially M1 and Wavestation from the Digital Edition are beasts for cold pads and bells and stuff that you can use in contrast to all the virtual analog synths you usually find.

I would highly recommend Sylenth, z3ta+2, or Massive. You can buy a truck load of specialized presets and still spend a whole lot less than the stock ReFX Nexus if what you are looking for are sounds ready-to-go. Nexus expansions, to my understanding, are put out only by ReFX and cost like 3 times more than most sound designers charge for their soundbanks for the other synths. If you are planning on buying a synth, keep your eyes pealed, as you pretty much never have to pay full price. (For instance, z3ta+2 this last week had a 50% off sale.)

I remember Lavender posted on her tumblr about a "sexy" lead she made with that thing in order to praise the synth, but all it was was a classic saw wave + high resonance BP filter + LFO modulated cutoff + distortion, used in a lot of classic techno tracks. A demo I saw on youtube made it look really interesting, so I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on that synth.

Fab Filter Twin 2 is also a super awesome subtractive synthesizer with nearly limitless modulation capabilities and some of the best filters in existence. Fab Filter products are all great though. I'm not sure why Twin 2 isn't nearly as popular as most other synths are.

That cannot be; it has Saw, Triangle, Sine, Square, and white noise, and the Square is PWM enabled.

I think what you are referring to is FabFilter One, which is a basic single-oscillator synth. Twin 2 is an entirely different synth, also by FabFilter. I recommend trying out Twin 2 if you haven't already!
