I walked into a Guitar Center last month and the synth was like $500. Needless to say, I became skeptical when the clerk told me that it was worth the money.

So the thing is a sampler with synthesis capabilities? That seems like a contradiction, doesn't it?

How so? A synth creates a waveform (soft synths get their waveforms from samples too) and loops it, a sampler plays back something recorded a pitches it up based on its algorithms. I know of a couple synths that do this sort of thing.

Are you talking about the omni synth or something else? I don't see is as a contradition.

Check out some of the videos on the product page, looks pretty incredible to me (though it's debatable whether it's worth $500)

Omnisphere is a nice sounding synth, but believe me: it's EXTREMELY overpriced. It is NOT worth the money. Now, if it were priced around 200 or something, it would be fine. It was just given lots of marketing, making it seem like it was a big deal. It's also very bulky and takes up lots of memory, so if thats an issue for you well, you're screwed. Not sure how it handles with CPU consumption.

If you're impressed with it, than go ahead and buy it, but it failed to do anything special for me :/

Omnisphere is 50GB of samples. Ranging from choirs to strings to samples of synths. It's basically Nexus but better.

Not really. Nexus is a glorified preset machine that allows a certain amount of tweaking, whereas Omnisphere is a fully-fledged synthesizer that allows you to design sounds from scratch (with or without the included samples).

Depends on the synth, a good number of the better sounding ones actually calculate their waveforms in real time (e.g. Sylenth1, SynthSquad).

There's a Roland Ghia synth in a local electronics shop that I've had my eye on.
They let people fiddle with it, so take it from me, it sounds pretty nice!

I've tried out the Gaia a couple of times at the music stores, its nice enough but I would never buy one at street price, second hand might be worth it. The above video is far, far from a Gaia though, obviously.

I definitely agree.

When I first started out in music, I just had a few softsynths, until one day, I decided that I wanted some hardsynths, so I bought my first one last year, which was a Roland SH-201, then I picked up a classic Roland D-50, which was in need of some TLC (pitch bender needs fixing, and a few keys need cleaning), but otherwise, it sounds just as good as it did in 1987.

Whilst the SH-201 is capable of some retro-sounding basses and leads, the D-50 is an absolute beast of a pad machine (they don't call it that for nothing!), and there's still a lot of patches being made out there, although for real programmability, you'll need a PG-1000 module, since the menus are just as confusing, but no so much as a Yamaha DX7, and FM synths in general.

Thanks to my recent purchase of a rackmount audio interface, I've got my eyes on some synth modules, and a VP-9000, like JayB's V-Synth XT, but much earlier, and lacks the synth, but is still a good sampler/vocal processor nonetheless.

By the way, are there any fellow hardsynth users in here?

I live near a shop that specializes in vintage synthesizers. Most of the stuff there is way too expensive for me to ever afford but I've heard the people there are super nice and they could probably help me with a lot of things.
As of right now I use my family's Roland FP 400 or whatever electric piano thing as a keyboard.

I'm gonna get some hardware synths once I have the cash.

Right now I'm strapped. I'm gonna need an audio interface and some extra space to do much ;-;

Once I move out (I'm gonna legally be an adult next year aaaaaah) I'll try find a place with a decent amount of room for such frivolous shit :3

I'm glad that I got massive in the Komplete package. I don't feel that its worth the $200.

Well, not sure if really anyone else uses Reason, but Thor is my favorite of the 3 default synths. It's very versatile once you've gotten the hang of it, and its versatility just about doubles once you start using the routing system to your fullest advantage.

Any other Reason users tried Antidote yet? (i hope that's the synth's name :3)
I've heard it's good.

Most times I'd be inclined to disagree (I enjoy learning by fiddling), but from the looks of it, you're probably right..

It's for building your own unique synths and stuff, correct?

If so, sounds really flexible.

I'd imagine.

Still, worth it. Even if for the knowledge of how synths work.
