most of the time in the manual for the synth it will say the channels it uses so then just configure that in your DAW

Other hardware you will have to tell it exactly where to look for midi (eg. Channel 4) and you will have to tell you daw to send midi to that same channel. Like acs said read that manual, twice, and then read it again. I a still finding new sub menus in my ms2000 and I've had it for almost a year.

In another life stream, before his fame and money he said "I a pretty sure one day ill just collect all sorts of synths and processors, I hope to be day replace everything on my computer with a piece of hardware". It was years ago and he's certainly lived up to it now.

yea I used to have this old Moog something that this guy put midi into and if you wanted to change the channel you had to reprogram the chip :/

Well the Minibrute doesn't look like it's midi will be as complicated as that. But I think I'm starting to understand he basic idea of what you have to do. It has to be told what channel to go to and such and all those other things. I'll probably have to spend a while figuring that out.

In which case it should come up as 'minibrute' in the place where you select where you want to send midi too (like instead of a soundcard/midi converter you'll pick minibrute).

Practical purpose? depends on your definition.

The cool thing about a modular synth of that immensity is that you can set it up to be as much or as little as you want it to be at once. Like, you could have a lead and bass sound running simultaneously. The more synth you have, the more you can do with it...It's kind of amazing to think about, and as a performer/musician/composer who uses one, it has completely changed my thought processes for the better.

Now, becoming a Godzilla-esque monster of synth power is actually one of my goals for the modular I own...but that's beside the point!

I'd like to mention that deadmau5 recreated the full castlevania theme using his modular patched with some other stuff.

Yeah...my camera isn't great, and for some reason my house has nowhere near enough lights in it. But it does give a nice ambience when you're working in it, which is a reasonable enough tradeoff.

The XL is a BEAST! Most of the time I use it with my other modular, a 20 space MOTM, for super huge noises.

That's exactly why I have dimmer lights in my studio.

The Volca series looks killer! and considering how hack friendly the Monotron series is, hopefully the Volcas will be easily mod'able into doing even cooler stuff.

I'm a bit of a Moog fanboy, so take this with a grain of salt, but GET THE XL! If your parents need help understanding why the XL is a great synth for you, I can help you with all the good arguments. For one, it's an instrument that will continue to be useful for you for as long as you are making music, which is unbelievably helpful.
