AMD used to be much better than Intel, which is where a large majority of their fans (especially gamers) came from.
Nowadays, Intel is just simply demolishing the power game, and (for the most part) most AMD CPUs are underpowered compared to Intel CPUs in the same price range.
One thing AMD does have an advantage on however, is multi-threading technology. Unfortunately, most applications now are just starting the take advantage of multi-core CPUs, so for the majority of applications and games, an Intel with fewer CPUs will perform better than an AMD with more CPUs.
Once all applications support multi-core CPUs, I think AMD will make a comeback, and I'll gladly switch back over, but for now, Intel provides better performance, and I'll choose a CPU that gives me the best performance vs what brand it is.
