Your goals/dreams as a musician?

Postby cplbradley » 12 Mar 2013 17:44

What are your goals as a musician? What do you hope to achieve that keeps you going and getting better?

For me, my goal is to release at least ONE song on a record label. Possibly release an EP. That would kick ass. Also I hope to perform live one day.

Making a living off my own music would be my goal, but I'd be pretty content with most jobs in the audio industry. Just as long as it can finance my hunger for synths I'd be pretty happy.

I just want to turn music into a career for myself. I'm still in high school, so that could change, but it's one of the few things I'm good at, and what I enjoy doing most, over anything else.

And I'm not talking about like 'hurr durr sell tracks and get on monstercat,' just anything to do with music, because right now, I think I'm kinda leaning towards wanting to major in Music Composition. That could all change though, because for the most part, I'm completely undecided.

Being commercially successful. Not going to happen any time soon (if at all) though.

I just want to be able to make GOOD music. Living off of it is a little far-fetched for me at this point.

I wanna make some cool tunes

I divide dreams and goals by quite a bit in my head so here it goes.

Goal- Umm, finish my second album. I live one step at a time.

Dreams- Getting a cheesy, subversive, animated tv show for my main "band". And aligning the planets, bringing all species into harmony for Ghelded Kultz.

Well, more or less, just be able to make an income from it. I'm also working on an album, and going overseas to perform is my current long-term goal. Short term, some local stuff, a lot of my friends want me to DJ their 18th Birthday Parties so that'll be a snap.

The overseas bit might come to fruition next year if I'm really god damned lucky.

I'm not a terribly deep person, and I don't desire much from my music. I just want to keep making it, share it, and enjoy it. Anything more than that is great but not my base motivations for making music.

Well, those things I listed aren't motivations as much as just things that I think would be nice.

Sometimes I want to have a DJ/Keytar battle with Renard, go into a blistering hour long solo, and take all his old ass video games as my prize.

But mostly I just want to make something cool. If I can make something really cool, then it'll be all worth it.

Industry-wise, I see it as an option, but I'm going into ME, not CS, and Mechanical Engineering doesn't lead itself too well to software. Maybe I'll switch majors when I get to college, get in on that Computer Science stuff. Now if only I knew how to program rather than build robots, then I could really get started. Or maybe Business, now that's a universal major I can get jiggy with.

A man most certainly can dream.

To all the people who want to be successful, just remember that deadmau5 has been releasing music since 1998, probably even before then, and didn't get popular until around 2008 or so. Just remember that most commercial producers have 10+ years of experience (yes, even Skrillex, before he was called Skrillex)

I really don't have much in the lines of goals for music. I both got into it and continue doing it because its a way for me to relax and have fun. Thats for my electronic music, at least.
As for piano, I plan on using it as a second income, a kind of part time job by either playing in places like church, bars, lobbies to various events, or by teaching on the side. I already do a fair bit of both through my local music school and make a good bit of money with it for it being a "We'll call you when something comes up" kind of schedule. For the most part, though, I plan on keeping it as a hobby on the side.

Your thinking about this the wrong way. Think "even if your have been doing it for ten years and still haven't gotten anywhere you still have a chance to break in".

That's basically an extension of what I'm saying. I'm saying that you shouldn't be discouraged if you aren't popular after two, three, four, etc years, because most professional musicians have been doing it for even longer.

To someday find something I can take pride in and enjoy. Then taking that and get as popular and known as possible without sacrificing integrity or my love for whatever I do. I'm hoping that thing is music, as that's where it seems to be leaning now, but who knows? I'm in that stage where anything can happen.

I don't want to get popular to be popular though, it would just be for motivation, critique on my work by someone in the higher-ups, and money to be able to constantly do what I love to do. To make a living off of it without having to work another job, or something similar.

I first want to actually learn how to make good music. Then I want to form a group with a few friends and wear turtlenecks and argyle socks and perform for hipsters. I have no desire to record label myself because it just seems as a hassle. Also I want to do a duet with Willie Nelson :3
