Offensive Material

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

Offensive Material

Postby Mundius » 30 Jan 2013 12:15

How do you guys feel on material that can be classified offensive, and where do you draw the line?

I made a webcomic, and I'm not sure whether to put the real banner or the censored one, although I'm leaning towards putting the real one up. It's actually (exactly) like Edmund McMillen's Cunt being censored to The C Word. Also, for curiosity.

I have almost no line to cross, and where it is, I don't know.

But having a character being raped by dickwolves is too offensive, some people claim! (Not a part of my comic, but it should as well be)

There are no lines I won't cross (in nonpersonal situations. If I'm talking to a friend whose mother just died I'm obviously not going to make jokes about it).

I think computers should just have a built in sensor that can tell when parents are nearby, and when they are, it'll hide all offensive material or switch to something different, lol. The only thing I get offended by is when people post NSFW in SFW. Other than that, there isn't a whole lot of stuff that overly offends me.

I'd say you can post whatever you want, but since thats not helpfull in this situation ill say this:
If you dare show it to your parents its definatley not offensive.
If you dare show it to a stranger on the street its probably not offensive.
If you dare show it to a friend who knows you have sick humor it may very well be offensive.
If thats the only person you dare tell its definatley offensive.
If you dont even dare show that friend you make sexually racist jokes with you should probably consult a psychyatrist for comeing up with the idea.

Its not an ideal rule, and there may be exeptions, but you get the point.

Nothing drawn, to me, is offensive. If you post real gore images and shit, that's offensive. I guess it all has to do with grim reality.

Take a look at your content and decide who your audience is supposed to be. Obviously, if you had a significant viewer base already, you could look directly at it's characteristics, but, since you probably don't, you have to decide what key points you are making connections with. I have a strong suspicion that what you're doing suits the kind of person you are, so you can use that as a starting point.

I don't really care about taste in abstract, though I have the feeling I'm probably not interested in what you're selling. I'm no PC police, but something that is just vapid can piss me off; though I guess that depends on how it's played.

Good, because I don't want that crap in my comic. Little kids see it, maybe! (Also, the only humans are a 7 year old kid and some weird priest who does nothing to the story)

Anyway, waiting for a mod's or Ben's opinion.

Rape and racism are funny to those who find it funny, though we might shake our heads at them. The point is, as previously mentioned, to know your audience and find the "line" from there.

For example, if any of you have been on Tumblr, you know that if you make a rape joke, you will literally be lynched in real life. Although I'm not fond of many people's violent and overzealous white-knight counter attacks, that's a whole other issue...
If that same joke was posted on 4chan, you'd just be called a faggot, which is pretty normal.

From what it seems, though, you don't have any of the "lower brow" humor, so I'd say go ahead and post it if you think your audience will respond in a mostly positive way.

All of the Penny Arcade dickwolves strips were funny, especially the response, because it's a joke on them and how sociopathic they are- they're terrible and they know it, that's their JOB.
'Team Dickwolves' isn't funny, though, because it's too meta- they're too serious. There's no material too offensive to make funny, as long as you can take the right angle, but you can't just go BLARGH and then claim it's funny, it takes more skill than that.

We're being 16, not 6. 6 year olds don't know these words. At least I hope.

Anyway, that actually sort of is on topic, because he's listing things that can be offensive to some but not him, and I'm just adding a word that's considered as obscene in non North American countries.

No, you're acting like 6 year olds. Back on topic.

When you think having 'offensive' material is appropriate, keep your audience in mind. Having offensive material won't kill your chances as bad as lame jokes or bad art. But it doesn't really help you either. There are few people who go out of their way looking for that stuff because they crave it. That's a small demographic, and won't bring you much success.

I really don't care what I post. I have crossed so many lines already I don't think there's any chance I can go back to being "normal". I could post something really offensive, but I'd rather not piss off the mods on here so I won't.

If you want to piss off the mods here all you need to do is mention software piracy :3

Also word of advice. If you're easily offended, then you really shouldn't be on the internet at all. I'm just saying.

I am the biggest offender of this, and I am quite proud of it :D

Why are people so proud of piracy... I never understood it? It's not really all that cool, nor anything to brag about. But it seems we digress! It might be a good idea to lock this thread :)

We're not proud of it. Most of us don't brag about it either. I don't really care one way or another, I don't pirate anymore, but I don't care if you do or not.

But I digress, we should simply agree to disagree and move on before this becomes another piracy debate.
