Your Defining Song

Postby Symphon » 22 Dec 2012 12:24

So, I was looking at the thread where you post your first song, and it gave me an idea: What about your most important song?

Each artist has that one song that stands out to them. Whether that's your best song, favorite song, most meaningful, or the song that defines your style as an artist, we have one. So, go ahead and post yours and maybe explain why it's your defining song.

This is definitely mine. I learned a lot in the production of this song, and it really got my hands gripped on the whole trance idea. It's one of my best songs, taught me how to get a really good mastering effect, and so much more, not to mention it fits in with my current style, and the style I'll probably be keeping, really well.

I don't think this song illustrates my 'style', mostly because I don't have one yet and am still kinda doing whatever (case in point, my latest songs have been (in order from newest to oldest): chill whatever, neurofunk, house, slow dubstep, hardstyle, etc.).

But this song is still kinda special to me because it was the first song I feel legitimately proud of, even though it's not amazing or groundbreaking or whatever. Also apparently I mixed it well or something, idk.

This one would have to have my best production so far, and it's also got some of my most intricate composition (not a huge feat for someone else, but it's remarkably unrepetitive considering my previously typical style). My first track mixed using my new method (rendering out stems and adding in percussion hits and SFX while mixing), and I think it turned out pretty well. Someday I hope to top it.

This is probably my best remix, turning orchestral into trance. Helped that the original was awesome.

I feel like this piece defines what I'm all about: adventure! Fighting the forces of evil for the benefit of all (pony)kind, feeling the breeze against your face and the twinkle of courage in your eye. It is also to date my most quality song.

My next song I'm finishing in all honesty.... I think it will be my defining song.

If I had to choose between all of my songs, I would probably go to the corner and cry because I love every single ugly one.

But seriously though, my "defining" song would have to be Daybreak, my submission to our charity album, Faithful and Strong. It's the first song that I made that actually took a step towards seriousness and made me realize that music can truly make a difference :D

Ghelded Kultz tries to avoid having anything defining about them. But I think most people would assume that this is our defining song.

Why?
1) It's our most overexposed song
2) It's exemplifies our noise, no-fi roots.

For me personally, I find it to be okay, but I could have put more work into the drums, and mixing and all that other jazz. Point 2 is pretty important though, as this seems to be our current style.

As a musician as a whole I think my defining song is (My partner in Ghelded Kultz would of course have a different one) this

https://soundcloud.com/y-ed-pyklez/the-donkey-wants-to-run

It has everything that is my style. Improv lyrics for the sake of being contrary (political lyrics at that); pitch-deaf singing/shouting; slow and naive; ignorance of drum theory; and being a parody/in-the-style of something I don't understand (I didn't listen to punk/know anything about punk other than that it had something to do with yelling political lyrics when I made this song).

I just loved making this. It's the first song that I was somewhat proud of structure-wise (even though it's repetitive), and the one I felt that I put the most effort into. It's also my least popular song (by the wide, wide margin of seven listens to my second least popular).

Sadly, my defining song never got released due to someone who's name begins with 'I' and ends with 'beabronyrapper'. I put up this teaser on my Youtube with Rhyme Flow's verse, but besides that I just have the instrumental:

https://soundcloud.com/legion2190/final-instrumental-stroll

It's not my best by any means, technically or musically, but I can't help but be proud of this song in particular, just because it was really the best thing I had produced at the time, and was way ahead of anything I'd make for a while afterwards.

Pretty much the same situation as Legion, although mine didn't get finished due to my own laziness.

The mixing is awful and as far as composition, it's nice but nothing really special. But I fell in love with it as I was making it, and I still love it. Since this song I still don't think I've ever had more fun on a song. Emotionally and stylistically it's everything that defines me as a musician.

This one. Without a doubt.

It definitely isn't my normal style (although I would love to make more songs like this), but this is the first song where I was 100% proud of how it turned out. I seriously can't explain how proud I am of this song, because if you listen to it, and then some of my other songs, you might think "I thought ____ was a better song tho", but every little thing about this song is exactly how I wanted it to be. It's not perfect, but it's not meant to be. I was also super excited to finish this song, and I ended up working on it a little bit one day to get the general idea out, and the next day I worked on it from the moment I woke up till much later in the day until I had it finished. I never wanted to finish a song this fast, and I spent so much time making sure everything was just how I wanted in this song (which I normally don't do). I just

I just... yeah.

I very rarely 'amaze' myself because I hate all my music but this one was more of a surprise than anything. Its as if I took the song, made it my own, and produced something that sounds..."professional". Maybe its not, but this really surprises me every time I listen to it; especially the breakdown (1:15). Also gotta say I can't seem to make any party or hype music. Its always easy-going, easy-flow, "trancy" stuff. Hell even my first song was more trance than techno lol. Oh Hybrid, I love you!

Postby Mr. Bigglesworth » 28 Dec 2012 09:25

I'd say this. It's basically a big audio representation of me learning shit. Before I began the project for it, I had no clue how to string together a track. I started it, got stuck (and used too many soundgoodizers) and finished it 2 months later. It kinda asserted my general style as an artist. If I had to define my style, it'd be make 1 or 2 synths and just go to town with them, then do other stuff to fill in the gaps. From a technical standpoint, the mastering kinda sucks, but the mixing is ok.

It was also the first time I made my own snare drum.

This one just really taught me that music comes from inspiration, and you can't force an idea. It was really the start of me consistently making music. I'd say it's the closest thing to a 'defining song' I have right now.

I'd find it pretty hard to be proud of something that sucks from a musical standpoint, but has brilliant mastering and mixing :P Like Kyoga said, it's more about the first time you make something that falls together correctly and contrasts your earlier work in a good way.
