reFX christmas sale question

Postby derpytunes » 02 Dec 2012 13:38

So I'm looking at buying Nexus and it is currently on sale for $249. However they have this advent calendar thing that gives like a different deal every day. Is anyone familiar with how it works? Like today is $5 off anything. Should I wait and expect a bigger discount later? http://refx.com/advent_calendar/

I've got a better idea: buy an actual synth rather than a giant preset machine.

To answer your actual question: I don't know, I don't plan on buying Nexus or any reFX products.

You have some balls to even mention Nexus around here.

But yeah, I'd totally wait to see if they will offer any other deals. It wouldn't hurt to try.

Save your money, even at the cut price it's not worth it.

I've been eyeing sylenth1 as well, but the lazy part of me likes the premade sounds. Guess I'll just wait and see what other deals come up.

Buy sylenth, delete factory presets. Problem solved.

You really have something against presets? Or do sylenth's presets suck as much as Massive's?

Holy fuck, $5 off? major savings right there. Definitely gunna buy it and then I'll still be able to buy that microphone I've been eyeing for a bit. Haha, nah. I'd glue my eyes to the calender though, the deals will probably escalate to the point where they're giving away some of their other synths or the synths are half off. I've never owned Nexus, but from what I've heard, it can be pretty nice. As for a preset bank? I'm sure the nexus has actual controls. I imagine it's sorta like Massive. *looks up video of nexus* I guess it's more of a simplified version of massive, so it's on a learning curve, but it's mostly for leads. But once again, I've never used nexus before. I'd only get it if I could get it at a large discount, since I could make something similar to a patch from nexus with massive with a bit more effort.

It's just a massive preset machine. Seriously, I abused Nexus for a long time. Now I hate the thing unless I need to use a few samples from it, mostly guitar (run through NI) or piano (run through whatever I can find or pure)

My thoughts exactly  I have been demoing alot of different synths and I know nexus has some control. I just like that it has a variety of high quality sounds out of the box including guitar and choir that you can't get from massive. And btw, guys like PinkiePieSwear, omnipony, and even ATB I've heard use completely unmodified nexus presets and they seem to do quite well. Why did this turn into a nexus debate? lol I love this forum.

I got to agree that some of the guitars and choirs sounds good. But in my opinion i would save money for Omnisphere( which im doing right now) but its really expensive.

*looks up omnisphere, sees price* Ya, I'm not spending close to a months rent for a synth.

Fun Fact: MalenEst was one of the very first brony artists I ever heard. Your song Paint the Sky was on EQD which I had just discovered. It was the first brony song on my phone. And when I read that it was your first song made in fl, that was the first small part of the inspiration to start making my own music! Anywho, seeing your name reminded me of my early brony days.

Ugh, you're such a dick! >:3
Anyway, you do whatever you want bro lol. I mean I have it and the presets are either good or "work whenever they feel like it". I just got a huge Nexus 2 presets and over half doesn't work. I mean OVER half.

Although its pretty cool for live performance. Say you don't want to spend thousands on a synth, just bring your laptop, hook up the midi keyboard, and bam.

Oh and it looks pretty. I love me some lights =3 that's why I'm a researcher in chemiluminescence.

You are all defining Nexus incorrectly. It is not a synthesizer, nor is it preset focused. It is a ROMpler, you cannot add to it, you cannot manipulate it freely. The sounds are basic, and most DAWs come with samples of pianos, strings and whatever. Just add post processing for EDM production, sorted.

The fact is Nexus would be worthwhile if it was priced reasonably. It isn't it is extortionately expensive. You will sound generic because there is no control over the sound besides basic filtering and envelopes, you will not be as creative as you will spend forever looking for that one sound you need rather than just grabbing a synth and making it.

If you really want a decent ROMpler, buy Omnisphere. It has much more depth and character.

I actually got a lot of ideas for the sounds I create from Nexus. It's a chore to hear a sound and then have to re-create it from scratch because a little something was wrong with the "preset." (instead of being able to just tweak within the one application.)

I don't hate nexus, hell it's got a lot of neat sounds, but it is limited. If you don't like the sounds you hear in the demos, then don't bother with it. Like Lavender said, it wouldn't be so bad if they weren't charging as much as they are for it. There are some useable piano/pad/pluck sounds in there, but a lot of the sounds are generic and cheesy. So many pop musicians use it.

Still, if you like the sounds you hear, by all means go for it but wait for a little closer to Christmas. That's usually when the fun sales start happening. As for the problems MRPpony is having, I'm pretty sure that's due to it being an illegal copy. (could be wrong) I vaguely remember people complaining about half the expansions not working with their pirated copy. The retail copy shouldn't have that issue.

My copy of nexus tends to play a bit of hell with the fruity wrapper though. Every time I try to use the mouse wheel to scroll through presets, FL hangs up for a while. Massively inconvenient.

I don't mind reFX's Vengence packs. Pretty good samples, imo. If they have a sale on those, jump on it.
