Which OS do you use to Make music

Postby Orchestral_Design » 04 Aug 2012 16:45

Do you compose music on a PC or a Mac? Also, What is your preferred daw and why.
(bonus points if you list your spec's)
Ill go fist

I use a Mac for my compositions and the DAW I use is Logic Pro 9 Because it comes with lots of software instruments right out of the box, so you don't have to buy anything or get the "russian version" of certain VST's to start making music.
Specs
3.4Ghz Intel Corei7
16GB ram
27" IPS Display

Also I WILL NOT TOLERATE ANY FLAME WARS ABOUT WHICH IS BETTER They're both good, I use them interchangeably.

PC. Because it is modular as FYUCK!
Also because I grew up with PC's and they always work for me and I don't really like how I can't change registry files (it's MY data!) on a mac.
But with Boot Camp and all that, macs are starting to look cool.
But I can't build a mac.
And I build all my computers to save money.
So I probably would be interested in the new MacBook pro because DAT SCREEN, even though I despise DAT PRICE TAG ($2000, for a laptop with the same shit as the one I have now that I got for $1000? It better come with an auto-blowjob attachment and downloadable smoothies.)

I use Mac, and I use Logic Pro 9 also. Windows just doesn't cut it for what I do.

I also take regular gaming breaks.

PC, with LMMS (maybe Linux soon)

Dual Core
3GB of DDR2 Ram
24 inch Samsung Sync Master 300

Music is for me still only early Hobby (and my only Hobby) until I got the money to buy better Software and Hardware to make it more professionally (well, I don't plan to make a living off of it XD).

My next Purchase will be a new PC with i7, 16gb of DDR3 and maybe I'll think about buying a Professional DAW.

The 2 biggest current setbacks for me are that LMMS likes to reset all build in VST Effects when reloading, cuppled with the fact that it crashes constantly when you use other VSTis it's ungodly annoying and really destroys the mood to actually make music + lots of wasted time and afford.
The other thing is not being able to stretch or shorten a Sample without changing the note (or vice versa).

Mac is a nice all in one Package, and if I only would use it for making music it would surly be nice, but it's way too closed down for my Taste :/

I make different kinds of music, often get told that It sounds like something for a Video Game because I make only instrumentals, never had a chance to make music for an actual game. I would love to.

Eeyup. Windows 7 here.
Also, I've never really used a Mac before. I'd be interested in getting a Mac laptop for music and art and stuff (in fact, I almost definitely will if I get into this course I've applied for), but I just don't have that kind of money right now.

As for DAWs, FL Studio. It's -again - the only one with which I have any significant experience. I've been looking into Ableton Live 8 a bit, but I've finally gotten used to how stuff works in FL and I don't think I'll be changing all that soon.

Windows 7. I have no preferred DAW at the moment, though my main one (experimentation mainly) is FL Studio.

Specs: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/dQTr

I really want to get a new case. Oh, and my processor is OC'd to 3.8 GHz (sometimes). My cooling, case, and table are shit; no heatroom to OC higher.

I use Win 7 right now cause that's all I have. When I build my Pro Tools studio I might get a Mac. Not entirely sure if it's worth that price tag though.

Windows Vista, which is not bad at all with SP2 installed. I have it insanely optimized with only 25 processes and 500 mb ram on idle.

My specs: (please don't laugh :P)
Intel Celeron 420 1.6 ghz (keep in mind that this cpu is built off of Conroe architecture so it is better than Pentium 4 and is essentially a single core C2Duo)

2gb DDR2 RAM.

Some integrated audio

Geforce 210 video card with 512mb DDR2 memory

DAW: LMMS, and I'm starting to learn milkytracker, which is quite confusing.

Software: I'm original, so i use Sunvox. I used to use LMMS, but the crashing drove me insane.

There is a bug in current version of LMMS that crashes when you access the VST GUI while NOT in playback mode. A workaround is to only access VST interfaces when in playback mode. Or to use an older version, like 4.10 or 4.11 (I think 4.12 has the bug as well.)

it's not only this one bug (although thanks for telling me that :) ) there are tons of other Crashes with LMMS, from even loading the VST to working with the VST, with every button you press or controller you turn there is a chance that it will crash.

Generally after downgrading to 4.11 I seem to be getting less crashes when working with VST and there are no major features added in 4.13. Also, what VST's do you use?

EDIT: Yes there were major features added in 4.13 namely automation of VST plugins. Ugghh now I have to go back to 4.13 with all it's fun crashes.

I make music on Windows 7, but I regularly hop between that and Linux depending on what I'm doing. Interestingly, I do most of my gaming on Linux.

Windows Vista, and I know little about it other than that. I only have 2GB of RAM, and apparently that's really bad, but I haven't had an issue yet.

That's not really bad as long as you use non demanding vst plugins such as synth1and oatmeal. Also, there was a time when 2gb was standard and there was electronic music being produced during that time.

I use Windows 7 with Finale and FL Studio. However, if Finale and FL Studio ran well on Linux, I'd be using Linux Mint. (PC is not an operating system, by the way.)
