Who are your MLR Influences?

Postby senntenial » 14 Jul 2012 11:50

This thread discusses who you look up to in the MLR community. (different than regular inspirations thread) Sort of an ego boost thread, I guess. Also a thanks to the awesome musicians.
My favourite musicians on MLR in no particular order:

Makkon
FlutterRex
5Copy
Ark
DJ MHM
Sci
Stormwolf
Kyoga
Psychedelic Brony

And a few more I can't name off the top of my head. Thanks for being awesome :3

Makkon (We all knew this)
Dr. Dissonance (Ambient and steampunk stuff is awesome)
Glaze (Want It Need It is the same BPM and style as Rainbow Factory)
Pinkie Pie Swear (I tried a song in his style and it didn't turn out so great. My flutterbrute songs are a bit based on his stuff)
Not a Clever Pony (Awesome style of music, very slick kind of electronic music that carries melodies very well)

posting this in here because it's relevent~
http://scibot9000.tumblr.com/post/23505 ... -this-song

though musically, it's more like this:
Supersaw Hoover: LOUD SOUNDS! DISTORTION! THESE THINGS ARE AMAZING!
Sadsic: I drew lots of trippy-hoppy-type inspiration from him, plus what I said in the above link.
PinkiePieSwear: ...combined with
SoGreatandPowerful: besides "sample chopping", I think I grabbed a bit more of an emotional inspiration from these two. It went like this: Pogo --> PPS --> SGaP
UnanimousDelivers: this guy was a less musically included version of Shnabubula. (in that he made YTPMV/mashups instead of stupidly awesome whatever-Shnabubula-makes)

and...everyone, really. being surrounded by so many musicians has been great for me.
(I know I forgot several people, but augh)

Makkon and PinkiePieSwear are my two biggest influences, period, MLR or no MLR. I've also taken a lot from Foozogz (because SO MUCH HAPPY), ArtAttack, NACP, and, to a lesser extent, Glaze. Tombstone too; even though I don't like most of his music, there's some good stuff going on in there that I like to steal.

Me, cause i'm a dick like that :3

hmm...i'd have to say Glaze and Odyssey, I feel they have a better understanding of musical composition than many pony musicians. Everyone likes Tombstone, but you can't help but say that he tends to "rehash" certain styles and even progressions. Doesn't mean he sucks, he's amazing, but Glaze and Odyssey bring something new to the table with each song, they're all unique (Even if Odyssey stays with usually the same synths and "Eurobeat" styles)

But yeah, I think it's funny how half of these responses are the typical superstar names, and half are people who actually use MLR. I must admit, I was expecting more of the latter, because strictly speaking, this thread is about influences from this site, and most of the big names don't even have the time to be a part of this forum

But while we're on big names, uh, Jackle App. I love that man so much it's probably unhealthy.

The first two who come to mind are definitely Glaze and Odyssey. Odyssey, because he was the very first brony musician I ever heard of, and because well, I do Eurobeat too, so of course I'd look up to him! Oh and Glaze, because I just love his compositional style, he is really good at thinking of melodies, and his songs are just generally extremely catchy!
Oh yeah and both of them are extremely sexy voices.

Some other musicians I really look up to/need to thank for being awesome are
HertzDevil (He doesn't really make pony music anymore but I guess he was once a part of MLR, and anyway I respect him regardless)
Interrobang Pie
Overkillius
Foozogz
HMage
Kyoga
Stablefree
PhillyPu
Dr Dissonance
Omnipony
ThatSonofaMitch
Michael A
Triangle
Kil6969

And many more! Just can't really list every single one of them I guess!

Makkon, His style of composition is really inspiring, and has a really good ear for instrumentation and texture.
Alex S., He knows his stuff when it comes to sound design and compression, a lot to be learned there.
Six of Lasers, He told me the story of how he finished his Balloon Party track, and it was really inspiring.
AcousticBrony, Just... damn. very diverse, well put together tracks and a multitude of styles.
Odyssee Eurobeat, Ever since I first talked to him on Skype, I've enjoyed his music more so. he is so enthusiastic about what he does, easy to talk to, hella creative and dedicated. Pretty much the definition of an inspiration right there.
d.notive, He is one of the few people nowadays proving that hardware is still as and even more capable than the modern software standard for music production, and has some very deep, personal roots in the music he makes.

There are so many more I could list, so I'll sum it up this. Since joining MLR I've made so many friends, surrounded myself by people with amazing, diverse and unique talent. Everyone has something to contribute, something different to share, a new way of working, a new kind of sound, a new approach. That is what inspires me about this community. No matter if it be on the forum or the Skype or the IRC.

Acoustic Brony: Close friends, awesome music, what more can you ask for?

Still accumulating influences. Definitely checking out folks' Soundcloud and other pages wherever I can, and I suppose we'll see what influence follows! I'm really enjoying Kyoga and Mutagen's work, so far, and if I've followed you on Soundcloud, it's because I dig what you're doing.

As for well-known MLR artists, Jackle-App is the first I ever heard, and I've admired his work. I think he got the creative ball rolling for me, at least in terms of introducing me to the music community of bronies.
