I'm done with EqD

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

I'm done with EqD

Postby Matthew N. » 06 Jul 2012 12:12

When I first saw the idea of a website featuring various pony artists I was shocked - especially seeing that there was no genre division and songs of all sorts were getting in.

What I've been seeing for the past month is something completely different. I am not sure what's the cause, but surely something must have happened.

Songs that are getting featured often have nothing in common with the actual show the website is based on. What the hell is up with that? What are the "new" criteria for being featured - because if it's all about making any kind of song, not making it pony-themed but just mashing in a pony background to the youtube video seals the deal then I prefer to make music just for myself ("Art for art's sake.")

What is really striking is the fact that EqD is very biased. I've been discussing this topic with a lot of guys here and there and they all agree - most lesser known artists in general will have that status glued to them forever because nobody wants to help and promote them. I sure would like to be heard, but I am not going to kill myself over that.

So... yeah. I shall keep letting the MLR community know about my songs, upload them to youtube, soundcloud and eqbeats... but that's about it. Equestria Daily totally did it for me with completely ignoring my songs and teasing me with emails full of hope.

/semi-rant.

For all of you that will still battle for highlights on EqD - I honestly wish you all the luck in the world, because it looks like you will need it!

That's another thing. If they have time to check the submissions (usually following links directly from the email), then how damn difficult would be to reply why was the song not accepted?

Well, I don't want to turn this into an EqD hate thread, but they are running a pony website. It honestly doesn't seem to hard to respond to someone who has sent in multiple submissions as to why he/she hasn't been accepted.

Which, in my case I don't care much because I KNOW I'm not good at this. Your remix on the other hand is directly related to the show. I don't get it. I've seen stuff on there that had no relation to pony at all besides the picture, and it sounded just like my song "Over Her Pasture" :|

The problem is that submissions go directly to Seth's email and not a pre-listener email or something
So unless you particularly amaze Seth (by being either really popular or catering to his interests *hint Trixie*) there's the possibility your submission will never make it to the pre-listeners if he forgets it.

Aside from that EqD's standards are all over the place either going from too strict to nonexistant and the whole site is never held to a uniform standard (hence fanfics tend to get away with way more things).

We feel your pain man, honestly this isn't the first nor will it be the last frustration with EqD thread, just keep making music and putting it up on youtube and you'll get your own dedicated audience soon enough, you certainly have the talent to.

And that's exactly what I will do, completely forgetting about EqD of which I once thought as the place where dreams come true (as far as music is concerned, of course.)

Oh, and thank you! Hearing this from someone like you definitely makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Matthew, I'm glad to see someone else is doing progressive house and trance, and your doing a good job at it. :)

One thing that almost got my second track denied was its lenght - most of prelisteners don't really like to listen to original mixes of tracks in our genres as they are too long I guess, that's why it might be a good idea to just do radio edits of full mixes next time. I'll try and see how that works.

I've had content on EqD before.

If you do get something in, you will get an e-mail back that says something along the lines of "To zeee que!" I know it can be frustrating. I've seen this topic alot within the community. I'm just trying to imagine with the size of this fanbase if they had a submissions box, how quickly it'd be flooded?

I just saw this was on the "Lesser Knowns" album. There's a good reason maybe. Do you know if the album got EqD'd?

Why even have pre-listeners then? I mean, seriously, what's the point? If a song can be shot down before it even reaches the pre-listeners, then there's no point for them to be there. None.

First of all, I am quite honoured to have you as one of my little number of subscribers. Your music is so damn awesome.

Second of all - yeah, I guess they never go to clubs. ;)

Personal blog? Filly, please. If anything, it is not personal. It's one of the most popular MLP-related news sites out there. Sure he can do whatever he wants, but if that's your constructive input to this thread then do not post anything else.

Also, EQD hasn't exactly pleased everyone. As time goes on, it's seeming more and more people are kind of fed up with their music submission process, and rightfully so. Hopefully they notice and change their ways.

This is your best chance, keep the song under 4 minutes and have a very short intro.
Captain Ironhelm wrote:It's a guy's personal blog, he can do whatever he wants.

I know this isn't the answer you want but it really is the best answer to the question. Its just a guys blog that a lot of people vist, thats all I think anytime I submit my work; they don't have to feature me but if they do, great!

^That. If that really is the case, why set it up that way? It seems incredibly counter intuitive to have a bottleneck before another bottleneck.

yeah you guys got to remember next to fanfiction writers we have the hardest time in this community getting our stuff out to the public what they're should be is a pony music website that the fans need to discover and then pony music would be a lot easier to discover and share.

This post kinda shows the problem. There ARE pony music websites. Equestrian Rhythm, the Brony Musician Directory, and Equestria Music all serve that purpose. People just need to turn to other websites. Eqd, sadly, refuses to post competing websites, meaning people have to find them on their own. We need to get the word out about these places.

The point is guys, EqD is far from a personal blog right now. I mean, Seth basically employed various people to create posts, they have pre-readers, pre-listeners, and he gets a relatively shitton of revenue from all the ads and the hundreds of millions of page views that he has.

You can't on one hand say "EqD is the biggest source of MLP news/fan content" and on the other "EqD is a personal blog of one guy".

The most practical thing would be a pre-listener specific email that should be listed under the "Submit" section on EqD, and get someone to check that email, the same way all these other people on EqD post and moderate the site. That person would then post the songs to the prelisteners.

I understand that EqD gets more and more submissions per day, but this is EXACTLY why they need to simplify and improve the submission method, not throw away more songs before pre-listeners to save time.

I can't see why Seth can't incorporate this system and I really don't want to believe that it's all an ego trip. If you're gonna advertise as a huge brony portal and if you have hundreds of milions of views, you better do it right.

At least don't take it all out on prelisteners because I've heard they do clean up the rooms every now and then and they try to review songs, keep in mind not all bronies live in the US so there are different timezones involved, so there are never the same people voting on the songs, thus the criteria may vary judging by the fact that Seth didn't exactly give them any rules as to judging music except maybe "Make sure it's pony" or "Make sure it's not too repetitive".

I realize that EQD has some serious issues.

However, I really don't give a fuck. I still like EQD. The fact that EQD is even what it is today is a miracle. You guys should be a little more optimistic. This isn't a conspiracy against lesser known artists.

I am one of the prelisteners and this is not entirely true.
Sethisto is the one who receives the e-mails and sends us the tracks which we have to judge. A few tracks did slip past the prelisteners to get a spotlight post (for example the big blue wave song by Alex S.), and ofcourse EqD gets a ton of e-mails every day so sometimes they lose submissions.

I've been told there is also a different group of prelisteners on steam which judge tracks based on how much they appeal to them, rather than how well produced they are. I don't know anything else about this group though, Sethisto only mentioned it once.

He has no time to listen to each song, so I don't think he really shoots down tracks before they arrive at the prelisteners, but yes he does forget to send us the occasional track. This actually happened to one of my new songs aswell, so I know how frustrating it can be, but it's very understandable. We get about 10 tracks each day.

The music community in this fandom went from a handful of musicians to hundreds of them. I think we're going to need a new system for music on Equestria Daily. We've discussed a separate music tab with Sethisto and he told us he'd look into it.
