Is music just a hobby or is it a possible career for you?

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

Is music just a hobby or is it a possible career for you?

Or is it already a career?

I'm curious in knowing what you guys think :D

For me it's definitively a possible career.

Well yeah, I use Dr Drum all the time, so far it has gotten me many bitches, and with that I have attracted many labels who are interested in my bangers.

I will turn them down though beacuse Dr Drum is my only label because it allows me to sell tracks for 500$.

I like toying with the idea of going into some sort of music-related career, if for no other reason than the fact that I could not possibly care about anything as much as music, but I still have to treat production like a hobby so as to keep my head not wedged up my ass :D

Right now, it's only a hobby. I hope that i will be able to make money out of my music later on, but i doubt that i will be able to make a living with my music.

I agree with this, brony music is something I do in my free time and I wouldn't sell it for personal wealth.

I am hoping to work in the music industry, whether I am an artist playing live shows or just the guy in the mxing studio I enjoy it all.

Its just a hobby for me. Granted, one that I gladly take tips for, but a hobby. Im thinking of starting to open up my "studio" to local kids to record stuff for really cheap. I'll record and master and whatnot. Maybe teach lessons too. But music making as a career is too much of a dream to ever be reality for me. Plus its more fun without a label hounding you for new stuff.

Possible career for me. I'm gonna take music at college soon, so I'm off to a good start I think.

I'll stay independent (without music lessons or whatever, thank you) and make music a career.
If and when that happens, I'll still make pony music, but not sell it, I'll only sell original and Touhou arranges, and maybe whatever I get permission to do rearrangements/covers/remixes/whatever of.
However, I also want to make a game series, a huge game series with a big plot. Since I focus on melody above all, it'd be easier to make good melodies for game music.
Sounds like a silly dream to most I bet, but I'll go for it anyways.

I hate the idea of working for other people and I'm tired of the world treating me like a doormat. I'm also tired of being told how and what to do all the time, so I don't care if my chances are even 1%, it's there and there's always a chance.

It's purely a hobby for me. I don't plan on monetizing it for the time being. Plus, my main career takes up a very large portion of my time lol. However, maybe one day... who knows? Few years down the road. What I would absolutely love to do is create something unique. A merger of genres or something. Like country and electro. That'd be sweeeet.

For me it's something between a hobby and a career. I started with music so that I could make my own tracks for games or other projects I do (and because it's fun, of course), but being a professional musician or artist or whatever, has never really been a goal for me.

More along a...career for a good cause, I guess? I do sell my music, but not forcefully, and any funds I get from it either go to needed equipment, or other people. If I ever do get "big", and I have everything I absolutely need to produce, I hope to help out my family (mostly my mom and dad, for putting up with me and my antics), friends, and various charities.

I've always loved helping people, and I love making music, so accomplishing this one day will really make me...love life...or something...that kind implies I didn't like life before...y'know what I mean.

Hobby for now. If I'm still going at it for years and years after (Keep in mind that I have only started working with electronic music for 5 months. Real instruments I have played for years, but never got into serious song making with it), then maybe it'll be a career. Only time will tell.

In the meantime, have some irrelevant .gif Because a Soup post is not allowed to not have anything irrelevant.

That sounds like a really cool idea.

For me, music is a hobby. A very dedicated hobby, and an escape when I need one. I really don't like the idea of music becoming a "job" as opposed to just something I do for fun.

I don't know. I honestly don't know. I love it so much, but I can't do it under pressure so well.
Maybe just a hobby with some revenue then. I dunno. I'm honestly so unsure about it.

I hope to give guitar lessons and work in a music shop in the event any of the bands I'm in/will be in never go anywhere. I'll be happy doing that. I suppose that still counts as music.

Considering I'm doing a Bachelor of Music Composition at University, I would hope I can make it a career.
Also, I really want to know what that picture was now...
