Note to noobies regarding names

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

Note to noobies regarding names

Postby senntenial » 26 Jun 2012 14:42

Hey. I've noticed that a ton of you newer guys have been picking some interesting names for yourself - for example, just stuff like apple-blossom or fantastic-filly. And I'm here to tell you that's a bad idea. When you guys get a name, id have to suggest you come up with an original, non-pony name, and here is why: 1. You look more professional. Non bronys can take your music more seriously. 2. You aren't limiting yourself to pony music. Let's face it, the fandom will die down one day, or you're going to want to make songs that aren't pony related. Having an original name makes this possible. 3. You're more memorable. All names that I remember are the odd ones, like 5copy or DJ MHM. Not pony ones that sort of all merge together. Anyway, yeah. Just a suggestion. I can go on and on, but these are the 3 most prominent. You might be thinking, "I'll just have a pony alias", but why not keep your popularity instead of having 2 names to release music from?

Because instead of going out into the actual production world with the name "princess apple smartie jack twilight awesome" you can sound pro. Idk.

The best way to have a pony name that's still srs bsns is to just add pony to the end of it - Omnipony, Mandopony, etc. Or just have a name that's pony-esque, like Princess Addictia.

Or you could just have a non-pony name, like me, and wallow in how non-pony you are
Youtube -- Soundcloud -- Tumblr -- Bandcamp (new album out!)

I can't feel my brain.

Yeah I was thinking about omnipony. He has an alias thats at least very close to his nonpony name, so he's good there haha.

Exactly, it shouldn't really matter. The only things i can think of is too choose a name that will come up easily when you search it online

I'm an idiot and chose one of the most common names on the planet (well i added a '!'), thus i am nearly impossible to find. Thankfully though 'Speedcore dave' is for some reason quite a common search term so i am known as that

Like Addicita said, it should be about the music. I've listened to a brilliant tracks by people with rather, odd, names. Like "Shitting Whore", "MC Cumblood", "Daisy", "H8" (not H8 seed). Those names may seem a bit OTT or unusual or common but people *still* listen to music regardless of what it is

Of course, I'm not saying there name has anything to do with the quality of their music.

Also this is all my opinion. If you wanna go against it, I don't care, just a suggestion sillies.

IMO its just easier to transfer your followers instead of having 2 names
You certainly can do it, I just don't see the point.

nobody with common sense would use an alias that they made pony music on a lot to go into the actual professional world of music
there has been one, maybe two cases where it worked
but that's it loalwoawlaowl
you can't be so attached to your followers that you're afraid to make a new alias because all of them won't follow it
if they actually like your music
they'll follow
and that's all that matters

But again, wouldn't it just be so much easier to have one name?
And I'm not saying strictly professional, just nonpony really.

If you're already established, an alias might be a good idea.

If you're in the position where you're considering going professional you'll most likely take up a new alias ANYWAYS when you start your professional career. You want your record to be spotless if you're serious about getting signed.

Thats the reason why Alaises exist. For instance, people in the speedcore/terrorcore world know me as 'Dave!'. Thats all fine and dandy. But if for some reason i decide to make dubstep under Dave!, there will be a backlash from my fans. As people who listen Speedcore/terror are really "anti mainstream". And making something like dubstep would cause me to gain new fans who like dubstep, but also loose my established fanbase.

Storyteim: There was a guy in the early 90's called DJ Paul Elstak. Now this bloke was one of the people who made Dutch Hardcore (gabba) quite famous in the underground scene. Now go on a few years Happy Hardcore appears. Which was basically a really watered down version of gabba. People who loved Gabba hated happy hardcore, as it was scene as 'Gabba for pussies' in the nicest sense possible.

Now DJ Paul Elstak thought "Hey, Happy hardcore is quite popular! Maybe i'll make a few quid out of it". So he released some happy hardcore records under 'DJ Paul Elstak'

Usual people who bought his vinyl were like "Wtf why the fuck would you make that?!". In the ensuing months he received tonnes of death threats and has pretty much been banned from playing in Amsterdam (Or rotterdam, i cant remember) because he dipped his toes in the happy hardcore scene.

If he released it under a different alais, he could of probably avoided all that drama.

Thats just an example of what can happen to people using the same alais for everything

Huh, really? I dont know. For one I can somewhat understand a big genre jump, but for poni to me it's just changing the title a bit. To all their own, though...

I think its kinda funny especially if we say turned on mtv jams and the announcer comes on and says, give it up for the hottest new artist PinkiepieSwear then again it could convert people to bronys.
