Pictures of Pretty Things

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

Pictures of Pretty Things

Postby North Kozar » 09 Mar 2012 21:55

I love taking pictures and just had an epic night last night chasing auroras (and by chasing, I mean finding a dark location where there were hundreds of other people and chilling for a few hours). I wanted to share them and make non-northerners jelly. But I also realized there wasn't a topic for posting pictures of pretty things. I don't know if any of you are into photography to any degree, but now there's a place to share if you feel so inclined or to just talk about photography in general.

Good idea! Also good to hear that the solar flare didn't zap us back into the stone age! I like that straight up picture too, really interesting view.

Here's some stuff from my mission, back in the day. No, I didn't go to Europe.

This last one is one of my favorite pictures I have taken, I even have a 16x20 print of it right beside me.

I'm only average at best, thanks though. Here are two pictures with my favorite lens in the world, an 80mm Tilt Shift!

The weather that day sucked, but the lens natual saturation helped. These have only been resized no color correction or anything of the sort. Its just what the lens does best, saturates ALL the colors!

Oh, I've seen those types of pictures before. Everything looks like little toys. Never understood how they worked, though.

I visited the north once, and a solar flare happened to hit, and there were auras....but it was overcast the entire night. I missed it. ;_;

Honestly, for all of my life I've lived up here, and this was the first time I can remember seeing auroras. Apparently I did when I was really young, but most of the times when it happens, things seem to be overcast... Like tonight, it's overcast and snowing so we can't see all the pretty that's probably going on. But it's not too bad. We're about to beat our record for annual snowfall. I guess record beating is as cool as colorful magic sky lights... Right?

Makkon, the stonework in that second picture is really cool, I like that picture a lot. Also the last one is pretty creepy. Is it like rust or paint or something? And Impulse, zomg, I love that black and white picture so much. And the orange one is super cool because of the glow and reflections off the water.
Here's some older pictures of mine:

Taken at a local air show

Despite turning out kinda underexposed, I just love the sky in this picture.
Image
Ugh. Moon pictures... I have the hardest time with them. It's either the moon is out of focus/glowing and I can get foreground, or I can get the moon like this. There just has to be a way to get both. But probably isn't.

And now I'm inspired to take up photography again. Thanks everyone!

Also, North, I am so damn jelly of your sky. Where I live, I get barely any good nights because of the residual light from Cincinnati.

I might take a night walk for the Hell of tonight and I might take my camera.

You take such pretty pictures. I don't have my own camera yet, but I have taken pictures with my father's some crazy extremely professional Canon something. He is really into photography. I'll probably get his current camera when he buys a new one, which he's planning to do very soon. In the mean time, I took this with my PHONE last winter in front of my house:

And the following shots I took with my father's camera:

Terribly small images, resized for blogs. The originals are on my father's laptop, .RAW files.

The large one(s?) would've been better resized but I was a lazy fuck. Open them in a new tab and look at them that way yo.

I've been playing around with a DSRL for about 4 years. Still have the same lil old camera that I started with. I am nowhere as proficient as I could be. :I

the4thImpulse:

It's a gradient that I added in postprocessing so yeah, kind of cheating! 8)
My infrared shots get close to that colour naturally though, when I edit the white balance and levels that is!

random: Sure seems like *puts on sunglasses* you have your ducks in a row! Yeeeeah... ok. Cool shots! I really love the Firetruck one, panning is fun. Also the one with the Washington Memorial has really cool composition. Also I love the cat pictures. And cats. Cats are the awesome.

natsukashi: The picture with the "IKEA" sign (I believe that's what it says) has a very faint looking sundog on the right side, which adds a really neat subtle effect, I like that picture. I also really love the one with the trampoline and kid slide, it feels really powerful to me.

Doofcake: The sand picture is sooo awesome! I absolutely love sand dune pictures. Also your last one with the misty veil of fog covering the rocks is really cool, too!
