Note to noobies regarding names

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

Just pick a name

and make sure it doesn't sound stupid, pony or not

McDropwub is equally as stupid as FluttershyFan1, so it shouldn't apply to pony names or not

You can have a name starting with Pony and be infinite times better than DJ HardRocking

I have a pony name and a non-pony name. My non-pony name (the one I usually use) is Ryse and my pony name is obviously apple boom, are they both okay?

Also this is meh logo :D

This is all personal preference, but an artist name (in general) should have be the following three things:

1) Unique (as in, not be something like jimi_the_Hendrix91 or with ponies DJ Flutts9123)
2) Easy to recognize and to stand out (connected to the above)
3) Not sound stupid when said out loud (although this is, of course, subjective)

Woooo this is why I'm happy with my name.

I made it before I did pony music so yeah I figure it would translate well anyway.

I really don't expect to get signed to a record label but if I did I would probably change my name (or just make a new alias) to something that's easier to spell/remember so that people could find me easier.

Pretty much sums it up, which is why I told you guys to steer clear of poni names as they generally fail at all three categories.

An ambiguous name will always be the best, since you can use it for everything :D Finally to keep piling on i'll quote Chumbawamba on how they chose their name in place of warnings of datedness (for those who have no idea who the are, they are the band that made that demonically catchy song in the 90s. This one):

Chumbawamba doesn't mean anything. At the time we formed (early '80s) there was a rush of bands with obvious names. It was the time of ‘peace punk' and you couldn't get across a youth club dance floor without bumping into a Disorder, a Subhumans, a Decadent Youth or an Anthrax t-shirt. We liked the sound of Chumbawamba because it wasn't nailing ourselves down. Thatcher On Acid were a good band but it's lucky for them that Thatcher stayed in power for 11 years. If her influence had only lasted 18 months Thatcher On Acid's sell-by date would have come and gone a lot sooner. We wanted a name which wouldn't date

Actually, Piedoom, I agree with your original post. I don't have anything more to add to it than an affirmation that I know a number of musicians in the fandom that wish they chose a non-pony name to go by now. When you change your name, not everyone knows about it, and you lose a lot of your following.

Other than that, many people may never be willing to give your music a chance with a pony name.

Could you please remove that video from your signature? It's unsightly. Thanks.

And yes, isn't it horrible?
Videos really do take up so much space, should be disabled in my opinion.

You didn't see along with the video it said "annoyingly large video that takes up too much space?". No? Anyway, getting the vibe you ain't cool with me. Oh well. Nice people skills, by the way. If there ever is anything that I've actually done please tell me so I can rectify it, otherwise you're just coming off as a tad silly.

It's this
All of this
It's your attitude

Please cut the snarky attitude, all your posts tend to send a message of being full of yourself, your threads, etc. People don't react well to people who seem stuck up with themselves. It seems ever since Balloon Party all your posts are lecturing the forum like you're it's parent or something, and to be quite frank you're not an amazing teacher.

It's one thing to provide feedback and criticism, it's another to deliver it like cocky douche.

Eh maybe I am a cocky douche. Truthfully this is the only post I can think of that I've ever lectured or argued any point. Furthermore I'll be the first to tell you I highly disliked my BP entry and question how it ever got in. I really just do think this is how I talk, and I apologize if it's coming off as cocky to you. Spry cue dramatic music.

(anyway, whitetail, I don't wanna start out on bad terms... I'm really not a douchey idiot, or at least I think not. Just start over? :)

Chromatic Chaos Pony is no longer a fitting name because it has pony. I'm thinking of renaming my username UberEpicDudeMetalhead4Life66612345678910. Thank you.

I guess I do agree with piedoom. It is a bit cliche to use a username like "Fluttershyfan1" or "rdb20percent" just like mr "dr drum" said earlier. But IMO, this applies to all pony forums. If you notice, it's the people who have creative usernames that tend to stick out more, and generally be popular too.

Meh i didn't see the lecturing tone to the post so not sure why the drama guys. It's kind of a common sense post and people can ignore sage advice. It is smart to think ahead to figure out both a good name and then if you want to continue being a music artist in a post-pony world (THE HORROR) but in reality it's a double edged sword. Being an amazing pony artist may or may not translate into a real life occupation and those non-bronies may scoff when they look at the subject matter of what you put out prior (or not).

Ultimately i don't think many newbs are going to see this post before both registering here AND putting out music but it may help someone. Of course anybody just getting started making music in the brony music scene THIS late in the game is likely a bad decision too as there's a LOT of people to stand out from.

If anyone has done a horrible choice of name selection it's me so if i had a time machine i would have done things differently too. But keeping different aliases (eve 2 youtube accounts if there's a big difference) for different subject matter is a good idea so you don't have 2 different audiences pitted against each other.

Fimbulin. Man, I've had this name forever it seems. My previous alias was Rowenna, because I liked roleplaying as a female elven warrior. >:D That was a long time ago.

Note to noobies finding the right name: Go with your gut. Pick something you can use for multiple things. I use Fimbulin on almost everything now. I just put "the Parasprite" on the end if I really want to occasionally.

And BENJAMIN SCHAAF is an annoying name for online interactions.
