Parents reactions to you liking ponies.

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

Don't talk to my father or sister, my mother is indifferent it's just another thing I'm into that she doesn't get.

One uh my friends think its "gay" (really) :/ others know but didn't say much about it, they jest a little but there cool about it. Though they haven't actually watched the show. None of them even have computers so they don't understand the size and impact of such a fandom anyway.

I had some friends a few years ago who I probably could have made bronys, but alas they moved away : (

Mom wasn't really surprised.
Dad rolled his eyes at first (i was into rainbows and unicorns already lol), but after he realized how popular ponies were online (and after he heard them mentioned on NPR) he realized it wasn't me just being gay.

Hehe, he didn't say that in so many words. Besides, I'm sure he still wonders if I'm gay or not >:3

And yeah, I'm new. I've been meaning to join the remix wars, but didn't think I was quite good enough yet. Then I saw this was the last one on EqD and was like OHSHI better join.

Well, it's the last one 'til Spring next year at least.

Also, if you don't think you're up to scratch, the Toastbeard weekly competition thing is a great place to give yourself something to aim for each week and hone your skills, all in the name of good fun and ponies. I've learnt a lot from the times I've participated.

Maybe you've heard of it, maybe you haven't. If the latter: HERE YOU GO.

I told my Mom first because she was very understanding and supportive when I told her I was pansexual. However, she scoffed and was confused, she asked if it was a gay thing, to which I replied no but that was probably one of the reasons I started liking it. She still thinks the whole fanbase is weird and she tells me when it gets brought up that she doesn't approve.

I never directly told my Dad and stepmom, but for an art project I made a 3d cutout of the mane six so they kind of figured it out from that, plus my little sisters watch g1 and I'm also a g1 fan so I watched it with them and gave them a few g1 episodes to watch. They don't really care that I like the show though, and my Dad doesn't know about bronies or anything, he just wonders why I like it so much.

As for my friends, I told them and they lol'ed, some disapproved, one of my best friends was sort of open minded about it but didn't really feel like watching the show, I managed to get him to watch the pilot though but he refused to watch part 2 because it was "too long", pfft.

I converted one brony though, he watched both seasons within like 2 weeks. Though he doesn't really feel like taking part in the comminity or anything. You guys should pressure him to, lol. Here's his Soundcloud page.

I haven't told my parents because I haven't really seen the need for it. Read as: I just don't want to and I don't know why

They probably wouldn't care, but one of my brony-friends had a ponython with me once (over at his place), and his mum kinda banned it for bringing up "traumatic childhood memories". Pity that - our ponythons were on big screen TVs with surround sound.

My parent disowned me and kicked me out. Now I'm living in a homeless shelter with little more than a laptop and a bowl of ramen.

Not really, actually they don't even know. There's no need to "come out" about it; it's not like being gay or anything.

None of my family seems to be particularly bothered by it; I watched every season 2 episode on TV when it came out. Hell, I think my dad even sat down at one point and watched an episode.

The funny thing is, a lot of peoples' parents thought it was less weird when they realized there was a fandom, but my parents would probably think it's more weird.
I like to think I'm well-rounded because I'm not really good at anything.

What a great thread! With all of these other replies, I hardly care about the bad(necro) that was done. :D

I had told my father when my friends were trying to get me into it. Because, well, it's no big deal. It's a TV show, that a lot of people are into -- nothing new there.

I told him that I was getting into watching the shows, and after I finished, I told him about that as well.

When I noticed there was a community behind this, and media being generated, and greatness to be had behind the walls of the internet in the theme of pony, I told my dad I was pretty much themed pony. Mostly due to the fact that I was. Listening to Pony-tracks on my phone(speakers) whilst we smoke, or the backgrounds on my compy, or whatever. I was more 'directed' I spose.

-- We just talked, he was really cool about it, and is understanding with most of anything I bring up. Then again, I like to think of myself as one-real-guy. 8)

When I made musics, I finally went outside of the box and started telling friends, other family members, etc.
I mentioned it to my brother who felt really off-put by the whole thing, mostly because I was trying to tell him to show his kids the show. Considering they are the target demographic, I don't know why he was off put by this.

I mentioned it to my cousin who instantly, "died a little inside." Then went on to tell me how I like a show for 8 year old girls, relentlessly, until I basically started and ended an argument. I tried to be really civil through the whole altercation, and was able to subside his 'rage' with nicotine and marijuana -.- people now'a'days....

I mentioned it to a co-worker, who didn't really know about anything! Until I mentioned the show itself(MLP:Fim), at which, he started doing what my cousin did, except, things didn't really escalate because we were mainly talking about music, though, he kept saying randomly throughout our conversations that night, "Dude... My 3 year old daughter watches that show!" -- He has also disowned any thought of collabing with me. He being a local-rapper, I thought that kinda sucked. :(

I could go on, but this post is already long enough, I think.

All-in-all, I'm leading an okay life, and in time haters WILL talk, in mind, just gotta trot.

Bottom line, I've gotten mixed results, it all relies on the person you are telling to have an open mind. If they are less open about things, chances are, it's gonna be the same for the show.

I've stopped telling people unless they seem like they're open enough. :) Haven't found anyone yet.
To judge ones intellect seems ignorant in reality.

Pfffff...

Hardly anyone knows. Dad hasn't a single clue (I hope), even though I've worked on graphic designs with ponies in 'em right in front of him. When he asks what I'm doing I just say "Oh, I'm just working on a picture," and he shrugs and walks away. Step mom doesn't know either and I really don't think she'd care. She apparently had a wild time in her teens, so she'd probably be most understanding.

Mom has no clue either (I hope). She'd just give me weird looks or something, then just shrug it off. Step dad is a born and raised country-man that enjoys fishing, hunting, football and served in 'Nam. If he ever finds out, and I go missing, I hope you can piece together the puzzle ;D (Not really, he'd probably hold some reservations but overall be fine with it).

My sister on the other hand... Oh boy. She kinda-maybe-sorta found out I was a brony by discovering my dA page, which was chalk-full of fanfics I wrote (A few were awfully shippy). I don't think she really cares I watch the show, but she got a kick from that. Luckily, she doesn't tell anyone because I blackmailed her with the fact that she reads gay fanfics about her favorite band.

Once I go to college though I'll probably be more open about it, jus' can't with the situation I'm in now.

Well, I _did_ try being gay (alright, but I love girlparts too much for that to stick ;) )
And my younger brother tried being gay
And my younger SISTER tried being gay
And both of them ended up married with a child or children of an opposite-sex partner
And I did marry, but I chose poorly and ended up divorcing
But when I was being gay, I brought a dude home to meet the family and my dad had a stroke a while after

And I'm over forty, so I'd like to see how much difference it would make if they DID want to disown me for liking ponies. They've done that too, for about a year, when I was younger. Just one of those things...

My family does not give a shit whether I love ponies. Actually my brother gets me poni themed stuff for birthday presents (need to get him more Minecraft stuff)

Fret not and poni on. If your family is worth being a family at all, it can survive you loving poni. (plus, gay isn't a disease, it's an orientation that can be tried to see if you like it better than hetero)

No special reaction from either parent. Just calm approval.

My 40 year old step brother doesn't get the whole thing and isn't eager to watch the show.

I pretty much straight-up told all my family and friends. My friends all enjoy the show too, and pretty much everyone in my family watches the show now except for my dad. He's pretty much neutral on the whole thing. I was nervous about telling my brother, but then he kindly reminded me about how he was gay, and that he really couldn't be judgmental since he watches Desperate Housewives.

Actually, my nephews all have their own blind bag ponies, and one even has an RD hat now, and my stepmom has bought a couple of shirts from WeLoveFine. One of my friend has a Derpy messenger bag now, and the only reason he didn't go with me to Trotcon is because he had no money.

So yeah, I'd say my machinations have been pretty successful.

So now you know my life story.

I think my parents don't really understand what the ponies in my room are. I have figurines that I paint myself in the same room as they are, and posters with ponies on them. However, my family came here from Russia, and my parents are oblivious to almost anything American-pop-culture related. So yeah, I get a free pass on this one.

I told them and focused more on the 'good/positive' parts if the fandom like the charity albums and general kindness towards each other. They questioned it at first as expected and watched an episode with me and understood there was more to the show then they could have ever guessed. They make jokes from time to time (not insults) and remain generally neutral towards the whole thing.

I treat it like another TV cartoon show, so I've never really gotten any guff over it, not much more than a brother getting disgusted when he saw a Vinyl boot animation when he asked to borrow my laptop last week. I've always kinda been known to be attached to cartoons, like Looney Tunes, Pixar, Fairly Odd Parents, Invader Zim, Spongebob, etc.

So pretty much no reaction. I honestly have no idea if it bothers anybody.
