Official Discussion Thread (Ghost Edit)

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

Honestly, "fandom" never really made sense to me the way people put it. People treat it like a organized religion, where everyone have a similar set of beliefs and so on. We don't, there's no Jesus and God is dead. It's way more abstract if you are in the fandom or not.

Some people would say its enough to watch the show, which alienates the people that have no intrest in joining a cult. Other people would say there's certain requirements. ("love and tolerate", have an OC, participate by making some sort of fanart.) It's weird too, especcially in other fandoms, like if I reblog a funny comic about AoT, apparently I'm in the fandom now, even though I only sorta liked it, and thought it was good enough to finish.
I'd say this goes for a lot of other fandoms too.

With just that really, how wouldn't that attract people from all levels of disgusting, everything from maybe-not-even-human-being to godsend?

Honestly, I've never had problems with "asshole" bronies, as I tend to avoid assholes in general. I don't care if they go on their entire life believing the same things, actually a lot of the time I feel its selfdeserved. It's not like they're going to live a very happy life upholding the things they believe anyways. So I don't feel like arguing with them, sure I don't really feel like becoming friends with them either, but that's sort of obvious.

I feel people say "Argh, this fandom is so bad" just like a lot of people say "Oooh, I hate all people" or similar statements that likes to make you feel like the world is conspiring against you. Well, thats what I take from it anyway, might be people mean it differently, idk.

To me, fandom and fanbase are two different things. In my view, you describe a fanbase, where people are simply fans of a thing; whereas a fandom is where people try to follow things to do with the subject matter and active engage with the show (taking it on board, "learning the lessons", generally taking this shit sprsrsly). So in my opinion, yeah the fandom can suck at times, but the general fanbase is fairly lax.

Again, this is just my viewpoint and I doubt others share it with me. And I don't think I described my point very well but eh..

Its not so much I dislike bronies as an idea but I do highly dislike the incredibly pervasive attitude of gross misogyny and rampant entitlement that this particular fandom harbors to a far greater degree than any other I've seen.

This so much this

I understand that there's all kind of good and bad elements in this fandom. I guess i don't think the misogyny is indicative of anywhere near a prevalent attitude OF the fandom. After all it would pretty ironic if nerdy guys love a feminist show about female ponies so that they could all hang out with other guys and be misogynistic about it. I'm sure some 16 year old dweebs may just do that, but if thats the case then clearly they aren't paying any attention to the morales in the show or the beliefs of the majority of the fanbase. I will say this fanbase does need more female representation to counter that (and not hanging out at the sides of the fandom but being active collaborative part of it) and we do need to pull people aside when they are acting like jackasses.

So I've finally gotten round to starting a pone YouTube channel, and whilst making the banner a wallpaper fell out. So here's a wallpaper for anyone who might want it.

Back on topic, I think the vast majority of bronies are really chill and don't get involved with drama, but the minority seem to get all the attention and bring the rest of us down with them.

I think misogyny in bronydom is not because bronies are given to misogyny or anything. Misogyny is ingrained in our psyches from before we're even old enough to like MLP over anything else. Even those of us who try to avoid being sexist are given to sexism because our culture primes us for it. To say that bronies are unique in that kinda gets away from the point that sexism is literally everywhere. So it's all well and good to make fun of bronies being douchebag MRAs who love fedoras and hate women, but it's necessary to recognize that these guys are the product of a much more insidious force, and that force is not borne of MLP.

Do GPA's work differently in Australia because over here a 6.5 GPA would mean you were little less than a goddess (4 is the highest tabulated score over here, you can usually get a few points higher - I had a 4.13 - if you don't bend them to a curve)

Either way good job!

You probably could get up to a 5.0 gpa if the gpa scores are weighted. (meaning the honors kids get a higher gpa.) Though a 5.0, if possible, would be incredibly difficult to achieve.

I was homeschooled so there wasn't anything such as "honors" really the only reason I managed to get a higher than 4 was because I got a higher than 100% overall score on my physics class I took at a local college...
