Genres You Dislike That Have Influenced You

Postby MixolydianPony » 18 Jan 2013 15:31

What are some songs or elements from genres you normally dislike, but have actually influenced your music?

Or, maybe if you're particularly open minded and don't hate any particular genre, what are elements of a genre you don't make that have influenced your music?

It's been said before that you should listen to music you don't like, because you will inevitably pick up on things you DO like, and incorporating those into your own works will help you to become a better musician.

--

I can't think of any song in particular, unfortunately, but I've always had a distaste for country music. And yet, I've managed to pick out a few elements that I really like and try to incorporate into my own writing. I love electric lead guitar in a lot of country music. It's bluesy, but it's neither rock nor blues. Also, country styled vocal harmonies are quite appealing to me, despite my inability to create them.

Trance/Ambient, not a big fan of both, no dislike for them, but I've never really cared for both genres, yet I've noticed I've picked up a few elements from both and instill them into my music.

I don't really like dubstep either, but I'm trying to practice sound design, and that's the area I'm aiming torwards whilst doing it.

Not a big fan of IDM as I'm a big EDM fan, that said i do appreciate that it takes bigger risks, goes for somore more artistic sensability, and uses different techniques. I didn't actively enjoy experimetal or noise music from a listener's point of view before the last 2 years but i enjoyed making some and trying to think outside the box on some pre-pony stuff i made before joining here. I also learned to appreciate some harder to digest material that barely tries to be what others consider music.

Case in point: EAI

Not something i enjoy listening to after i investigated and listened to a few records but i learned to appreciate what they were trying to do at least and it left somewhat of an impression.

Hmm, I don't have a genre that I don't like yet take influence from. I like orchestral, which is where I get the influence to make my songs melodic and beautiful (or try to, in some cases), I like dubstep which is where I get the influence to make a part of a song where it's largely focused on the modulation of the bassline or the bassline in general. I don't really take motivation from anywhere else :P

I don't listen to a ton of jazz, but I find myself working with swing time (or 6/4, whichever you prefer) every now and then and absolutely loving the feel I get from it. Not to mention it's basically the only way you can alter the time signature in house music

I'd say pretty much all EDM (especially trance). Not saying I dislike these genres but I sure don't make them. Yet I've been seeing more 4 on the floor and cheesy synth melodies in my music. I think.

I like electronic music, however I don't make it. But often times when I'm only partially conscious there'll be a synth lead, or some pad chords playing in my head. If I have my phone on hand at the time, I'll record it and that sometimes becomes the guitar line or chord progression for a song.

Not the biggest fan of modern country (Personally I think all the artists sound the same and may as well be called Southern Pop), but I'm with Mix on this one, I too enjoy the guitar work. Now if I could only get past the fact that Taylor Swift must be a crappy girlfriend to write that many break-up songs...

Joking aside, I'm not a huge fan of any (Insert something here) core (It sounds muddy a lot of the times and I can't hear half of what the singer is screaming/growling/squealing like a pig), but I do have friends who are involved with that sort of music so I can't say I hate it, as I picked up some guitar tricks from them as well.

Avant Garde. Most of it is just terrible and most of the people who make it are self centered idiots who think they are better than most people. Yet some of it is simply beautiful. Take The Residents for example. Some of their songs are misses for me, Yet they do have a few gems tucked away

Now now now, quit describing my musical output. It's not nice :D

In all actuality I think avant garde influences people a whole lot more than they realize. It's fairly pervasive within musical culture because the influential pop (in the broadest sense of the word) musicians often like this sort of thing and add it to their music. Than imitators take these aspect without realizing their origin and yet another element of avant garde is added to pop culture.

Difficult to say for me. Possibly whatever genre (no specifics, I'll probably have the wrong genre) with distorted guitars. I like distorting things :3

Speaking of distorting, it's high time I made (decent-non-bad-ick-sounding) Hardstyle :D

I have always disliked a lot of Trance, especially the crappy workout stuff aimed at women, with the crappy vocals tacked on and stuff. But I attempt to make Trance style synths all the time.

THIIIIS the Residents were an excellent band. I like their stuff before 1982 best, stuff like Third Reich n' Roll and Meet the Residents are absolute favorites and inspirational for me. Duck Stab also.

There is a lot of bad 'avant' stuff out there but much of it is very good. The 'bad' stuff I experienced when I was invited to perform a piece of mine in Slovenia at a computer music conference -- much of it was very 'academic', kinda bogus 'experimental' fake science stuff made to attract grant money and not much else. But there is interesting stuff going on too, and in the past. Penderecki, Art Bears, Henry Cow, The Residents, Thinking Plague, 5uu's, Bob Drake, U Totem, Ligeti, they all have very good stuff and are pretty 'out there'. And beautiful.

For instance:

Hm... I don't really listen to all that much hip-hop, but it's a huge influence on me for some reason. I like stuff like Outkast or MF Doom or whatever, but the amount of hip-hop I create is waayyy too high given the amount I listen to, which is pretty dang minimal.

IDM. I don't dislike it, but I'm not a fan. I do love the individual experimentation aspect of it, and while that's not really featured in my music too much (outside of relatively minor things like this neurofunk song I made at 190 bpm instead of 174) I'd like it to feature more.

I love most genres, from speedcore, to polka, to rock. I dont listen to them all equally, but I like them non the less.
The only genre I despise is Nigjtcore (is it even a genre?). Ironicly I do quite often end up with pitchshifted vocals... Allthough I try to avoid it usually.

I've never really liked atonal modern-era or jazz music. Despite that, I've found that learning jazz-style chord progressions and sequences makes improv a ton easier and more interesting.

Also, I don't care for screamo and death metal (much to loud and 'demonic' for my tastes), yet it did help me understand that music doesn't have to be all "notes", and can imploy just pure noise and "loudness" as well.
