Lyricists: What lyrics you've written mean the most to you?

Postby NightmareSnake » 08 Jan 2013 19:43

A lot of us write lyrics. And a lot of the lyrics we write come from an emotional place deep within that sometimes we don't even realize until the track is finished. Sometimes we think we're writing about one thing but we're really writing about something else. And sometimes something we write about a cartoon character is really about ourselves.

This is where we share the lyrics that we've written that mean the most to us.

For me, it's the choruses I wrote in My Own Two Wings. Those words, the more that I think about them, are really about my own life and all the things I've been through. Not gonna go into specifics and give my life story, but I'll just say these lyrics came from a place deeply rooted in my soul that I was never aware of until I really listened to my performance.

As soon as I get the stand, pop filter, AI and my own computer, I'll start writing lyrics and singing, but until then I'll just have to trust you on this, lol

I will just mention something weird that happened to me. I heard Jonsi's song "gathering Stories" and I really liked it. Especially because of the lyrics "you are my radio. You are my favorite song." Then I looked up the lyrics and turns out he was saying something completely different! So I am going to take credit for them because technically my subconscious came up with it, and eventually I hope I can incorporate that into a song. I think the reason I like the lyrics is because it reminds me of one of my best friends who practically introduced me to all the music I listen to ever, and saved me from becoming a stuck-up classical snob. (I still like classical music but I don't like people who claim it is the only good genre of music, and that was what I was on the pathway to become. Maybe I should write the song about that as well.)
But yeah, I am going to write the song about her eventually. Because quite a lot of songs remind me if her. Idk lol

I think I really pulled out the personal cord for this one.

I also did another song that was very.. Personal.
Called, The Feels.
To judge ones intellect seems ignorant in reality.

Thinking of the most reflective and picking only from released material, I'd have to say these:

https://soundcloud.com/slayerzogz/xix

Written and recorded shortly before I turned 19, these lyrics are literally about myself and my perspective.

While they definitely aren't (that) bad, I dunno if I'd choose this as the singular thing to represent myself with, or even the thing that I personally feel the deepest connection to. It's all expression, regardless of the story you tell. I'm actually more proud of later outings that, while aren't explicitly about myself, have to express some kind of experience on my part. Artistry isn't just about vulnerability either; I felt I've been my most clever/creative when being deceptive with my message.

I think, considering all that, I'd actually choose the lyrics in this song:

Go ahead, don't even listen to the damn thing, just go to the description on youtube and read the lyrics. Chances are, it isn't actually about what you think it is, and that's kinda the point (which I think is COOL).

The one that seems to resonate the most with people is

I've gotten more comments and feedback on this track than anything i've put out prior and yet this was never a track that made eqd. It was also my very first Toast Beard track and when i put it together I was incredinbly nervous about whether commenting on the brony "unrest" within the community was something i should be doing that early in my music making or if others would beat up the newbie for voicing issues about the community. Plus its spoken and not sung or rapped. In the end it was likely my biggest confidence i needed to really get rolling as a brony musician. And the kicker was they weren't my own lyrics, they were taken from a REAL thread on MLR which worried about the community imploding (way back in DEC 2011). So this is really just a thread condensed into song form with words from a few great people. The video additionally took some really dark and deep confessions from the pony confessions tumblr just gave it a whole other dimension and a bit of a happy ending.

But my best song with MY lyrics is Don't Ragequit which is both about how hard it is to play L4D2 (which i play religiously) but also about how hard it is to live life make music in general (see the hugging and venting thread for so much mope). So i threw both mlp and L4D2 into the concept and into the video cause it was possible (thanks to hacks). So it's about hanging in there despite hardships and doubt. Also most people don't realize that L4D2 is not just a game about zombies but about counting on teammates as one bad apple can really spoil the bunch in the game (plus i've gotten to play with some awesome bronies on there such as Fluffaton, Aviators, Overkilius, and Foozogz a few times which was pretty swag.)

f*ck i'm rambling...sorry.

I think my most meaningful lyrics were for a song I called "Forgotten." I still have the instrumental, but I have yet to find someone to do the vocals. I'm pretty sure I'll finish it one day.

Either way, I never realized how much it was like me at the time until I realized later that I was in a bit of hole mentally. I was being ignored and put aside in my real life in multiple aspects. Ironically, the singer for the song (originally supposed to be Rina-Chan, and we even talked about it personally at a convention) even blew me off after 3 months of waiting. It actually helped me come to terms, though.

Lyrics:

Verse 1: What happened to before?
When we mattered so much more
To each other, as our friends
Stick together until the very end

One small thing tumbles to something bigger
Before the slowly decaying vigor
Of our relationships
Falls into something that’s

Chorus: Forgotten, it’s all forgotten
Into something that makes the heart feel rotten
Others give up to let it die
Leaves the strong ones to watch and cry

Just leave me to be forgotten
As they throw ideas that are misbegotten
Hate replaces love as the magic is gone
And friends become memories of “once upon”

Verse 2: How have I gotten stuck in a place such as this?
Blackness, darkness, surrounding the abyss
At a time like right now, I’m not sure which way to go
I wish my friends were here just to show

Me the direction to leave this emptiness
Instead of them talking down each other from pettiness
Possibly if I realize what makes us fight
I’ll figure it out myself how to make it to the light

<Chorus>

Revised Chorus: Forgotten, it might be forgotten
But in truth, it’s all too common
Others let go, the strong bear the burden
And as others see, they begin to hearten

Just find me to be forgotten
Standing in the back just to hearken
Hate replaces love with love that strengthens
I just hope I’m not completely forgotten

I hope I’m at least remembered
