Studio Headphones

Postby itroitnyah » 09 Oct 2012 20:34

Alright, so I'm searching for a pair of studio reference headphones, the ones that give a flatout frequency response and don't have the enhanced frequencies for the pleasuree of listening to music.

I mean like headphones built for mixing and music production. Like these, I guess would fit the description of what I want. And not an expensive pair either. I'm on a pretty strict budget because I'm hopefully getting a midi keyboard soon, and then my parents never spend a lot of money on christmas. And I don't have a job quite yet, so it's not like I can just wait a month for a $200 paycheck or anything.

I'm quite paranoid that you guys won't understand what I mean, but that's just me. Just ask if you need me to clarify

I heard that the krk KNS 6400's are great, really flat and detailed for their price. est price: $100-150

I personally use AKG K 142's and have no complaints. If I remember correctly they cost me around $120 or $130.

If you can, the best way to find a pair is simply to try some out. If the stores near you won't let you, trust the guys who work there, they normally know their stuff and will find you a reasonably priced pair with good quality.

I don't have studio quality headphones, so I can't help you there. BUT, here's a couple of useful links for you

I personally use the Shure SRH440's. They are a pretty decent pair, very flat, and they cost around $100, been using them for about two years now and they're still great.

One thing you should consider is a headphone amplifier. Some of the more expensive headphones can go a long way with one. However, if you can't afford one, you should go with a pair that has a low Ohm measurement. I'd say around 30 Ohms will fit most needs. I personally use the VRM box by focusrite as my DAC (digital-analogue converter) and headphone amp. It also has some software emulation for various speakers to help with mixing.

Here's a great website for reviews and comparison. I'd suggest taking all of your best pics or price range and compare them.

Most people will tell you that it's better to go with Studio Monitors, and for the most part, they are right, however, if you only have like $100 to spend, getting a solid pair of headphones will go a lot farther then say, $100 speakers.

After doing some research, I should state that finding studio quality headphones at anything less then the 40 Ohm range is not very realistic. So 40 Ohm to 100 Ohm is more realistic, and will still work fine on say, a laptop.
