What's so appealing about having an OC?

I haven't really focussed on my OC much. I just made something normal-ish in OC creator and called it a day. No backstory. No cutie mark. Essentially, I don't really have an OC, and desperately need to fix that at some point.

I'm not so sure of making my OC a ponysona of myself. I'm usually that guy who doesn't go out much, is awkward in public, and barely gets any sleep at night (causing me to sleep in school and in public). And I talk about music too much. So a ponysona of myself would probably be some exhausted, half asleep zombie of an earth pony smashing his head repeatedly against a computer; with a forever alone face as his cutie mark.

It would be the single most sorry-ass OC ever created. Even red and black alicorn OCs who are captain of the royal guard would look better than mine.

Or I could create a generic musician OC with the same manestyle as Rainbow Dash and a pair of headphones as its cutie mark. Seems legit.

I need to make an OC. Mine would probably also be a ponysana of me, I'm a fairly sociable guy who's more or less friends (or at least on good terms) with everyone, is smart but procrastinates a lot, and is skilled at writing. Speaking of which, I need to go finish my Twipie gorefic.

Anyway, I don't really care about making an OC, not really worth it considering I don't plan on being a pony-only musician. Maybe I'll make a few for fics, but that's probably it.
