Headphones vs Speakers - is it just me?

Postby CommandSpry » 15 Jul 2012 06:58

I prefer headphones, DON'T KILL ME PLZ

If you get good headphones with great vibrating bass, the sense of clarity and stereo separation and the surround you get from headphones for me is much better than those of speakers, even great hi-fi systems or monitors.

Not to mention, if you're gaming (competitively, FPS), speakers are a no-no.

Does anyone else prefer audophile or monitoring headphones over speakers?

Well headphones are more convenient in that you don't have to worry about disturbing anyone while working on music though from what I hear the stereo separation is actually more accurate on monitors if you place them right, you also have to imagine the most people will end up listening to your music from either a club or a car if you end up going commercial (depending on genre too) so it might be a good habit to start mixing them from monitors in that regard since it's closer to where it's going to end up being played the most.

Also car speakers are <3
I'd mix all my songs on them if it weren't a hassle to drag my setup out to me car, if anything I always end up listening to my song on my car's stereo when I'm going into finalizing mixing because you can hear mixing problems so much more clearly.

I have good headphones and good monitors, I mix and create more with the monitors and I master more with the headphones. My monitors have excellent stereo imaging and the highs are really detailed, more than my headphones which have the bass response that my monitors lack.

I believe its best to have both, two good listening enviroments is always better than one.

Cars make the best studios with all those random angles to diffuse the sound.

I prefer to listen to my songs on headphones, but I always mix and master on monitors.

If you mix and master on headphones, you have to remember that while a mix may sound clean when you're directly feeding left/right stereo sound into each ear, there's no guarantee that it will sound clean when played on large PA systems found in clubs and concerts, because in that type of environment you have both left/right stereo being mixed and deciphered by both your ears at the same time, vs separately.

I only use my monitors, hate using headphones even though I have pretty good ones. I only really use my headphones for when I record vocals or late night listening.

EDIT: Although I am using studio monitors, I would pick headphones over hi-fi speakers any day.

I just use my speakers. I love them, and I get surprisingly good stereo separation from the little things. Even though I have pretty good headphones, I only use them when I'm in a public place and don't want to disturb anyone.

AC always on = speakers are a bad idea.

Know an audio engineer = free studio headphones.

My only issue is finding an excuse to play my music over actual speakers. Thus far, every single one of my tracks has been mixed exclusively on headphones.

I like to listen to music on my speakers, because they do quite an excellent job hiding any mistakes in the midrange. I don't even know how to describe it -- it's not like the midrange is louder or anything, it's just a lot harder to hear mistakes in that area.

That said, I mix almost exclusively on my headphones and check the bass on my speakers at the end.

I pan my bass into my headphones and then set it up so only higher frequencies are allowed to play over my speakers at the same time. /troll

I actually use headphones, but most of what I do is personal experimenting. I'm going to forever and always send my tracks to someone else to check my mixing because I'm not very good at it and have failed horribly in the past. I will listen on my speakers after I think I've done a good job just to check if it sounds the same.

I use headphones, only because I don't have speakers.
If I had speakers, I'd probably still mix and master on the headphones and use the speakers to check anyway.

I enjoy headphones when I feel like getting lost in music, or when I need to not disturb others around me with my unusual programs and tunes. Otherwise, I tend to just default to speakers, especially my car speakers.
