Is music just a hobby or is it a possible career for you?

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

That's the thing about asian parents, they want you to do a certain career instead of letting you follow your own.

It's not always true though

the thing is, my parents don't care what kind of career i pursue, as long as it's not pornography or some sort of art. :p

they're supportive of my music, but ultimately what they care about is financial security.

It was very, very close to becoming a career. I almost majored in trumpet performance, and I was VERY close to getting into Carnegie Mellon's music technology program.

But, nope. I'm in computer science, making music as a hobby, and I'm really happy I made that decision. It means that if I get tired of programming, I can escape to music (instead of vice versa).

A hobby. Should I ever use my music to earn money, it would be either for a) a side job playing in a bar or a restaurant (or a wedding or a hotel. You get the point), b) busking or c) charity. For some reason, it doesn't feel right to me if I pursue it as a career. I think it's because I want to use my music to spread happiness and I don't want to earn a lot of money from that unless I really have to. That, or the thought of a label demanding I make them a song scares me. I don't know *shrugs*.

I wouldn't stop playing music, though. It makes me happy and it makes other people happy. 'Sides, one's passion doesn't have to be one's career.

That's sort of the path I'm looking towards. Perhaps not the same major, but basically getting a degree in something that interests me, and making music on the side.

The plus side of music: You don't need a degree to be an electronic musician or in a rock band.

Most definitely hobby,
although, I'm not resigning myself to anything.

That, and more of that. It scares the f outta me, especially that I make my music in FREE time.

But to the topic: No, I don't believe my music will ever get anywhere good enough to have a real career connected to it. I'll just keep making free music. :)

You don't need a record label. In fact, due to the crap most labels do towards the musicians under them, there's been an increasingly bigger trend in self-promotion.

Trickier, yes. Better in the long run? Probably.

I would never turn down an offer to make a career out of music production. But at the moment I'm aiming at sound design~

I would absolutely love it if I could make a career out of music, but that's a long ways off. I still have a lot to learn. Music for me is a learning process, and I'm always striving to do better. For now, It's just a hobby, but who knows where I'll end up later on? Music is my passion, my lifeblood; if I can make a career out of that, I'd be happy, but I'm not going to be heartbroken if I'm 40 and I still haven't made it as a musician.

I've actually played a couple acoustic live shows here and there, and I have to say it's a lot of fun playing live. Even if I can just play the local bars and stuff that'd be cool. Right now, I'm headed down two paths- Music and VA work. If I can make it as either I'll be happy.
It ain't Brony Music without a blaring and intrusive airhorn sample.

I'd really love to sell my soul to the arts and become a media darling, but that can only happen under a blue moon and three goat sacrifices. Ultimately, I couldn't care less about making money off music. I just want to be adored by all.

As a career, sure, I'll take it over any job in the world. But it wouldn't be about the money. The label can pay for my food and my studio and keep the rest. I just want to make cool stuff.

But this is probably gonna be just another part of my life as I try to get a job in military/industrial robotics.

Hobby for me. Ive invested so much money into it... But you know I really just couldn't make it as a career. I mean to go into scoring or stuff like that you have to be REALLY good.
I just feel as though music is something I can always do, I don't have to go to a school for it or focus on it.

Well for me my electronic music side of things is just a hobby, I would absolutely love to make it a career but I don't see that happening anytime soon or at all. However, I do teach guitar lessons privately and that gives me some cash which is pretty cool.
