What Keeps You Motivated?

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

@Gnarrkhaz: Exercises are important, but if you make your practice just about doing exercises, of course it's going to get boring. Practice is about exploring, and shouldn't be a chore.

Even if you do nothing but exercises 12 hours a day for a year, all you're going to end up with is a lot of clean, impressive technique and a lot of really boring music. Two or three notes played passionately can be a more effective solo than two or three thousand notes played rapidly with expert precision.

By all means, perfect your technique, and practice the heck out of it, but you have to strike a balance if you're going to learn to play soulfully and creatively. Playing things that you enjoy, and find little ways to make them your own.

Whenever i compose stuff i don't see that as exercise because i don't really get better at anything. Perhaps i should make some backing tracks and practise improvisation over them.

Ponies, this community, ponies, that feeling that you've accomplished something awesome after a lot of hardwork and dedication, making other people smile with music, ponies, other people's compliments and such, listening to other musicians, thinking, "Woah, dude. That guy's awesome." Inspires me to work harder, ya know? Ponies.

Need I go on?

That feeling that my music might one day sound good enough to play when walking around Pripyat with a ton of bronies.

Recently it's been outside. Usually it's just sorta the normal "talk about stuff" like projects, music or otherwise, that people are working on. But just being outside lets me get a breath of fresh air (lolyeahpun) and allows me to come back with either totally new ideas or a completely fresh perspective on another project. That and yard work. As much as I dislike it, it's actually pretty tranquil in a strange way, and I can totally see how people get into gardening because of it. The other thing that keeps me motivated is actually finishing projects. I end up with a lot of partially done bits or just ideas that never go anywhere, so when I actually finish something and am proud of how it came out, then it pushes me to wanting to do more. But I usually get myself with the whole excuse of "hey I just finished something now I can slack off" thing. Also just exploring new types of music, since I'm still relatively new to it all.

To vent my bottled up creativity. For years I never really enjoyed doing anything artistic or creative like drawing or anything like that, but now I've found a way to express my creativity. I don't think this is motivation, but more of a purpose as to why I make music.

I almost always have to create something and I love all art in general.
The main thing I like for creating music is creating melodies specifically.
