Depending on somebody's password strength, cracking a hash can take anywhere from a few hours to a few decades.
Some notable ways of cracking hashes include:
Dictionary Attack (Useful for passwords comprised of single words.)
Brute Force Attack (Useful for smaller passwords comprised of letters and numbers.)
Rainbow Table Attack (Useful for cracking complicated passwords comprised of letters, numbers, and special characters. Also takes the longest, due to the numerous possibilities.)
Personally, I don't see what use gaining peoples hashes are. Even if they crack a few passwords, they could login to the site they got it from as a regular user, and MAYBE access other sites such as FB, YT, or Gmail, depending if the person was dumb and used a simple password that could be cracked in the first place, and even dumber if they used it for multiple websites.
If it's something they feel inclined to do, by all means, it's their lives they're wasting away for little to no gain except for the potential of a few laughs.
If they get overly serious about it and try to access a person's bank or identity theft, then all they'll really gain is some very, very good hackers tracking them down and getting charged with prison sentences.
