A thing or two I have learned from doing MLP music is...

Postby Tsyolin » 14 Nov 2011 11:58

Feel free to fill in the blank... I shall do so with two different answers.

1. You really need to be patient, listen to your work carefully and make it as perfect as you can.
2. Taiko Drums can make nearly anything sound 20% more epic.

Ohgod, EVERYTHING. I learned everything I know about production as well as studio work because of this fandom. No joke. Going in here, I was another run-of-the-mill classical musician looking to expand musically.

So, I didn't start writing dubstep until I came here. In fact, I'd only written 1-2 electric songs before coming here. In that sense, a big part of my
Music these days was develop, inspired and refined here.

Secondly, my music output has increased exponentially. I use to get a song done in maybe a week, 3 days if I machine gunned it out. Now there are days where I'm getting 2-2.5 songs done in a day (rushing to meet a toastbeard deadline).

Thirdly - although related - is don't sweat the little stuff. I used to keep back songs if I didn't know where to go next and got caught up in trying to perfect them. Now I've learnt that sometimes it's just better foreheads what you've got and move on. You can always come back later.

Finally, if you find something good, fight for it. There's lots of crazy stuff going on at the moment, what with forum redux and prelisteners and so on. This place means alot to me, as I've met so many great people and seen amazing things happen. I want this to go on as long as naturally possible, and I'm going to do what I can to make that happen :)

Your fatful student,

Well I can also add that I owe most of my knowledge of FL Studio and VST's and the such to ponies, I had only known a tad bit prior because of a MIDI Class.

I learned about how awesome the mlr community is and the artists in it!
I learned what NSFW means.
I learned that compression is a friend.
I learned that it's hard to keep this brony music thing a secret.
I learned.
I learned more.
I learned more, again.
I learned a third time.

I guess I knew a bit about composition and stuff before I got here, I think it was Rimsky-Korsakov that taught me the most. I'm new here, but I can already see the wealth of information that I'm going to learn from this surprising and peculiar fandom.

I'm also picking up little tidbits of stuff about remixing and electronic music production. Its not really my area, but its great to hear how different types of music are produced.

Damn straight, but lose the "nearly."

I learned that every single person on the planet is insane in their own way. You just have to embrace it to get the best sounds.

I didn't know anything about electronic music. Also, with the community projects and feedback, I'm more motivated to make more music, so I improve faster just from that.

Everything except metal.

I already knew a lot about metal before coming here (especially prog). But I learned everything about electronic music, music production, DAWs, VSTs, collaborating, lyric writing, rapping, singing, practicing, etc. from MLR. Or websites I found links to on MLR.

But in all seriousness, I didn't really get serious about music until I heard NACP's New Lunar Republic and The Stars Will Aid In Her Escape.

So, really everything. Though not everything I do is even remotely MLP related.

By again, do you mean in another new forum? Cause again sounds like an understatement if you only mean in MLR.

This has been a new experience for me entirely. I've learned that I can take great delight in creating songs based on a cartoon, and that a fandom of said cartoon can be such an amazing and supportive group of people. In its way, it's helped me expand my range of subject matter and composition style/motivations.

NOTHING matters as much as the feel and whether the music is right for the situation. The amount of effort you put in means absolutely nothing. The cost of the gear means nothing, the skill you showed means nothing, how developed the idea is means nothing by itself. All that matters is whether you got THAT FEEL right, and whether people wanted to have that feel right then.
